Arse`ne Wenger is expected to gather his squad, minus Dennis Bergkamp, at Luton Airport in mid-July for another Austrian training camp. ASTON VILLA For the third consecutive summer, David O’Leary is taking his squad to Sweden. The six-day Scandinavian trip is sandwiched by visits to Wycombe Wanderers, Wolverhamption Wanderers, Walsall and FC Utrecht in the Netherlands. BIRMINGHAM While the pitch at St Andrew’s is replaced, the players will be packing their bags for trips to Norway and Spain. Three matches in Norway and trips to Derby County, Northampton Town and QPR will be followed by a tournament in La Corun~a. BLACKBURN Mark Hughes, the manager, is finalising plans for a European pre-season schedule that will include either a training camp or participation in a tournament. The club are also looking for high-profile opponents for their eve-of-season friendly. CHARLTON Alan Curbishley has ordered his players to leave their passports at home and prepare for a tour of the South Coast. His players will be topping up their tans in Bournemouth and Torquay before moving back inland to play Watford. CHELSEA The club were scheduled to play in the ChampionsWorld Series in the United States but the tournament was cancelled after ChampionsWorld, the tournament promoter, filed for bankruptcy five months ago. EVERTON Everton supporters can wear their fetching new yellow “Everton in Europe” wristbands around Thailand, where their team play in the Asia Cup against Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers and the Thailand under-23 national team. FULHAM The squad will train in Germany before playing Schalke 04 on July 13. Their next friendly engagement is away to Swansea City on July 23. They fly to the United States to play Columbus Crew on July 27 and the MLS All-Stars on July 30. LIVERPOOL Liverpool are returning to Japan for the first time since they lost to Independiente in the World Club Championship in Tokyo in 1984. They will play Shimizu S Pulse on July 27 in Shizuoka and Kashima Antlers three days later at the Kashima Soccer Stadium. MANCHESTER CITY Stuart Pearce, the manager, packed his players off on their summer holidays with individually tailored training regimes and diet guidelines. He will get his first chance to cast an eye over the fruits of their labour in Thailand during the Asia Cup in July. MANCHESTER UNITED Unattached players are likely to feel distinctly lonely after Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, announced that players’ wives and children were welcome at his club’s training camp in Portugal at the end of June. A tour to China follows. MIDDLESBROUGH The club are heading off to Portugal on July 4 for a week-long training camp. They have yet to put any friendlies on the schedule but the weather there may be hot enough for Mark Viduka, if fit, to break into a sweat. NEWCASTLE A slightly embarrassed club official revealed that the club will not be playing any pre-season friendlies because they are taking part in the Intertoto Cup. The players have been ordered by Graeme Souness, the manager, to return on July 4. PORTSMOUTH Short trips to Havant & Waterlooville and Yeovil Town on July 12 and 16 will be followed by a French training camp and matches against AS Monaco and Bordeaux. The players will return to play Inter Milan at Fratton Park on July 31. SUNDERLAND Newly-promoted Sunderland will play Vancouver Whitecaps on July 16 as part of their pre-season tour of North America. They will then head to the United States for matches against Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers. TOTTENHAM England’s fair-play representatives in the draw for a Uefa Cup place are travelling to South Korea in July to play in the Peace Cup. Expect handshakes galore in matches against Boca Juniors, Sundowns FC and Real Sociedad. WEST BROMWICH Happy already to have completed one great escape this year, the club have yet to announce their summer plans. Bryan Robson, the manager, is poring over a map of Europe and the details of his deliberations will be revealed next week. WIGAN While rivals may be queueing at the check-in, Wigan players will be at motorway service stations. Their friendlies start at Burscough on July 28 and end at Accrington Stanley — after trips to Macclesfield Town, Morecambe and Southport. --
