England manager Roy Hodgson is only guaranteed a new contract if he reaches Euro 2016 semi-finals, says Greg Dyke By Jason Burt, Chief Football Correspondent, St Etienne 19 June 2016 ‧ 12:00pm Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has said that only reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016 will guarantee Roy Hodgson a new contract as England manager. England face Slovakia in their final Group B tie on Monday evening in St Etienne with a victory ensuring they will win the group and progress to a last-16 fixture at the Parc de Princes in Paris on Saturday where they would face one of the best third-placed nations. Hodgson’s current contract expires at the end of the tournament and he has declared that he wants to stay and take England to the 2018 World Cup but the FA have been stalling on a new deal. Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme Dyke laid out the criteria that Hodgson had to fulfill for talks to take place – with the chairman also stressing England need to play good football. “We have been pretty clear,” Dyke said. “No decision taken until this tournament is over. If we (England) have done well and played well then I think it will be renewed. “Semi-finals would be great. Quarter-final if we have played really well, hit one of the best sides and lose or go out on penalties. That is the sort of discussion that will go on.” It is difficult to see Hodgson surviving if England do not at least reach the last eight of the finals – with the FA also taking into consideration the reaction of fans and the media before they make their decision. There has however been a clear shift towards wanting Hodgson to stay which was detected around the time of the draw for the Euros last December when FA chief executive Martin Glenn indicating that he hoped the manager would remain after the finals. A significant factor in the FA’s thinking, to be blunt, is also the dearth of likely candidates to replace Hodgson, who who succeeded Fabio Capello before Euro 2012 and is now in his third tournament. The FA would prefer an English, British or so-called ‘homegrown’ manager if Hodgson is replaced but the reputations of managers such as Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers – who has just taken over at Celtic – have been damaged.
