As assistant to Bobby Robson, Mourinho was able to develop his tactical ideas on the game, his motivational style — and, crucially for the future of FC Porto and Chelsea, decided to strike out on his own. He goes so far as to blame Barcelona for developing some of his personal traits that are seen as arrogant and even provocative, but says they were born out of necessity and lays part of the cause at the feet of Robson. “It is sometimes necessary to be an agitator. An assistant coach has to try to have the qualities that his boss does not,” he said. “I was assistant to Mr Robson, who had a certain behaviour and posture and, at the same club, I was Louis van Gaal’s assistant, and he had a behaviour that was completely the opposite. As an assistant we have to be the complement to the coach, to fill a space that is empty. “In Spain I was unpopular in the sense that Robson was a person with a nicer personality, calm, passive and I was the agitator. I put my head on the block for Barcelona.” It was at the Nou Camp that he learnt to handle the stars, although he admits that their stardom has since reached an even higher level. “Handling big stars at Chelsea is not a problem for me because at Barcelona I had Ronaldo, Figo, Guardiola, Vitor Baia . . . top- level players. But I think the term ‘galactico’ is a more recent one. Another thing was Ronaldo who arrived at Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven where nobody knew him, and didn’t even have a publicity contract.” For all his efforts, he was seen by many at Barcelona as little more than a translator and admits that he stayed there for five years only for the money. “Many times I arrived home to my wife and took on the role of the critic,” he said. “During the day at the Nou Camp I worked normally as loyal assistant. At home I would moan about how Van Gaal does this and if it were me I would do that.” He said that all the trophies he won since leaving Barcelona, along with the various world manager of the year awards that he has received, vindicate the biggest decision of his career — to go it alone as a coach — and the credit is all due to his wife. He said: “My wife is the one responsible for the most important step in my career. She said: ‘If you know that you have everything to be a great coach, what are you waiting for? You like Barcelona and so do I; you like being at one of the biggest clubs in the world and I understand. If you feel frustrated because you want to be head coach, what are you afraid of? Another year or two in Barcelona? What for? Let’s pack our cases, go and speak to the president and let’s go.’ And I went . . . less than five years have gone by, I’m 42, I’m the best coach in the world for 2004.” At Chelsea he has carried on with some of the aggressive ways he learnt at Barcelona, making outspoken comments about opponents and referees. But he said he will not change: “Now, in England, I am at a club that has not won anything in five years and I feel the club needs an agitator to get it out of its state of inertia, a catalyst for positive emotions, someone who can develop growth and self-esteem, so I have to go for a certain type of behaviour and attitude.” He says that “Chelsea are slight favourites to get through, although we are both candidates to win the trophy”. But he will not allow himself to be swayed by sentiments, even though he has friends to catch up with when he returns. “Friends of mine from Barcelona were already in my house in London three months ago. Friends don’t stop being friends.” ------------- 这句话:"If you know that you have everything to be a great coach, what are you waiting for? "突然想起Gwen Stefani的歌 :) --
