He also pronounced his first words in Catalan. At around 12.00 this morning, Mark Van Bommel arrived at the FC Barcelona offices, where he met president Joan Laporta to sign his new contract. The Dutch star will wear the Barcelona colours for the next three seasons. He then went straight to the Press Room, where he was officially presented as Barcelona's first signing for the 2005-06 season. Waiting for him there was his old friend and international team-mate Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, who did not want to miss the event before flying off to Japan. In the presentation, Mark Van Bommel was accompanied by Joan Laporta, technical secretary Txiki Begiristain and first team coach Frank Rijkaard. A dream come true Mark Van Bommel said that "it has always been my dream to play for a big club like FC Barcelona, so I am very proud to wear this club's shirt". The midfielder admitted that he had listened to several other offers, but that "I always told my agent that I only wanted to play for Barca, and that's why I didn't enter talks with any other club". Before coming to Barcelona, Van Bommel had spoken in depth with other Dutch players like Gio, Philip and Marc Overmars. He also pointed out that "all Dutch people know about Barca". The Dutch international knows it won't be easy to secure a first team place: "It is always going to be difficult to win a place in a team like Barca where there are so many quality players that, like me, can play in several positions." But he believes that is good, because "if there are lots of players that can play in different positions then that's all the better for the team". Skill, winning mentality and team spirit On behalf of the club, president Joan Laporta said how pleased they are to have signed a player of Van Bommel's class. He told the press that "he is a player that has come here to win, and I am sure he will adapt well to the team". Txiki Begiristain described how the signing of Van Bommel had come about: "Barca first approached him last season, but in the end we went for other options. Now, in June, we have found a player who really wants to play for Barca and who has waited for the moment. " Speaking about the newest addition to the squad, Txiki highlighted the fact that "he is a consolidated player, and a team leader". Finally, Frank Rijkaard had his chance to say a few words about his compatriot Van Bommel: "He is a skilful player, with a winning mentality and he is a team man. I am sure he will connect well with the other players and will have a lot of success at Barca. It will be a pleasure to work with him next season." The first team coach did not want to provide the details of exactly where he plans to play Van Bommel: "He is a player who can play in several different positions in midfield, and now is not the time to make a decision as to where he will eventually be used.
