: How has a club that is based in one of Europe’s unemployment blackspots
: turned itself into the ruling power in the world’s most popular sport?
An obvious answer is that Barça plays as a team in a sport that has far too
many prima donnas.
Prima Donna
Barca play as a team in a (足球这个)运动里(which)有太多在意名份地位的人
(por que')
It keeps the ball moving, dominates possession and keeps
: its opponents under constant pressure. But there is a less obvious answer,
: too, and one that has implications beyond the football pitch. Barça has
: provided a distinctive solution to some of the most contentious problems in
: management theory. What is the right balance between stars and the rest of
: mankind? Should you buy talent or grow your own? How can you harness the
: enthusiasm of consumers to promote your brand? And how do you combine the
: advantages of local roots and global reach?
Q:There has been so much talk of La Masia, Barcelona's youth academy.
What are the lessons there?
Xavi: Most of our players are from Catalonya and have been here a long time.
Education is the key. Players have had 10 or 12 years here. When you arrive at
Barcelona the first thing they teach you is: think. Lieft your heard up,
move your head, see, think. Look before you get the ball. If you're getting
this pass, look to see if that guy is free. First time. Look at (Sergio)
Busquets. Busquets is the best central midfielder there is playing one-touch.
He doesn't need more. He controls, looks, and passes in one touch. Some players
need two or three touches and these days, given how physically demanding
football is, how fast players are, that's too much.
Q:Is the model exportable? Imagine we're running an English club and we ask
you to set up a youth system based on the Barcelona model. What do you do?
Xavi: Look for talent. Look for a certain profile. Other teams look for power
or physique. You play games in Catalonia at the age of 12 and Espanyol might
well beat Barcelona 3-0, but it doesn't matter. You're not trying to win. From
that Barcelona team, three players might make it; from the Espanyol team,
maybe none. Don't worry about winning but about educating, teaching. Barcelona
is more than that. You see a kid who lifts his head up, who plays the pass
first time, and you think:"yep, he'll do." Bring him here, let's coach him. And
maybe not all youth academies do that. There are lots of people working for
the system but [the idea] was Johan Cruyff's.
