Walesa calls on 'shamed' Grass to give up honour
Associated Press in Berlin
Monday August 14, 2006

The Nobel peace laureate Lech Walesa wants the German novelist Gu"nter Grass
to give up his honorary citizenship of the Polish city of Gdansk after
admitting he served in the Waffen-SS, a German newspaper reported yesterday.
Grass, 78, revealed in an interview he had been called up at 17 to join the
force. Asked why he was making the admission now, the Nobel literature
laureate said: "It weighed on me."
Grass was born in 1927 in Gdansk, then known as Danzig. He and Mr Walesa, the
former Polish president, are both honorary citizens. The revelation has drawn
a mixed reaction in Germany.
