标题[问题] 一个PP2双格填空的文意

PP2里面有一题双格填空不难选出答案，但是精确的文意并不是很了解。
麻烦大家看一下。题目如下。
The current __(i)__ of format in electronic scholarly publication
will not last beyond the point when amateur burnout occurs and amateurs
are replaced by traditional publishing companies: in an effort to reduce
costs through economies of scale, publishing firms tend toward __(ii)__ in
the format of their electronic publication projects.
选项是
(i): (A) diversity; (B) monotony; (C) refinement.
(ii): (D) homogeneity; (E) sophistication; (F) extremes.
冒号前面的意思是「目前多样的电子学术出版品会越来越式微。」
冒号後面的意思是「为了戮力於降低成本，出版商倾向於把电子出版品的形式单一化。」
因此可以选出A和D为答案。但是我不了解的地方是第二行的"last beyond the point"
、"amateur burnout"以及"amateurs are replaced by..."。
请问这三个在文中是什麽意思呢？
