According to the report, the official announcement will be Thursday. Under Suns coach Mike D'Antoni, Iavaroni was considered a defensive specialist on a team known for its up-tempo offense. Overall, he served for five seasons on the Phoenix bench. The former NBA forward was taught his coaching style as an assistant under the hard-nosed Pat Riley in Miami from 1999-2002. The report also said that Iavaroni and Suns vice president Dave Griffin were considered to be a package deal. However, as of Wednesday morning, Griffin had not been hired for a front-office position the report said. But with the draft coming up, Griffin may stay with the Suns until it is over but certainly should not be ruled out for a position in Memphis, which will lose well-respected team president Jerry West at the end of June. Iavaroni spent seven seasons in the NBA with three different teams and won an NBA championship with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1982-83. He reportedly will take over the struggling Grizzlies, who posted a league-worst 22-60 record this season.
