Trading cosmic psychedelia for epic, rough-cut rock & roll, the Stars are heavier than white-dwarf matter, with monolithic power chords and thunderclap drums that recall the protean metal-blues of Led Zeppelin and Cream but nod to punk, garage, and Krautrock as well. Ishihara's intense, dramatic vocals frequently evoke Jim Morrison, and he commands cuts like "Everlasting Daylight" and the hypnotic "Twinkle Outside" with shamanic authority. Kurihara's virtuoso guitar work is even more impressive, boasting an intricacy and daring that demands comparison with past greats like Hendrix, Page, and Verlaine.
