Peterson should have his second-straight Mountain West batting triple crown when the 2013 season concludes. He has been an excellent hitter throughout his college career, showcasing an easy swing with improving power and minimal unnecessary movement. It's easy to project success at the plate at the next level. Some have gone as far as calling Peterson the best pure hitter in college. Peterson is somewhat lacking as a defender, and may be pressed to play first base. The Lobos' defense improved significantly this season when Peterson moved over from third, allowing Alex Allbritton to take over at the hot corner. Peterson's bat should more than make up for any deficiencies with his glove, however, making him a solid mid-first round pick at the very least. Scout Report 2 DJ Peterson is probably the big fish in a little pond this season. I’ve seen him at Area Codes and then I saw him in the NCAA Regionals last spring. Here’ s the video. Here’s what I think. He can put the ball in play but not much else, so there had better be some defensive versatility for this guy. I don’t see him as a power corner, which is a problem, because no secondary tool really stood out for me. He’s a diver and I don’t like that, but if it works for him, it works for him. I don ’t see a lot of physical upside here. I just know that if you can’t run, if you have limited power, and an ordinary body — you better hit and hit a ton, otherwise this is going to be a quick ride. I know that if Peterson attempts to enter pro ball as the guy I saw last spring — purely a guy who wants to pull everything in sight — without clearly defined secondary tools — that the pro side scouts are going to sit in the stands, think this guy can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, and then remind themselves why they wanted to get out of FAs in the first place. I understand this guy makes it onto a lot of the national media watch lists and stuff and that’s fine, but I don’t really consider that in my opinion. This guy’s best shot to have a big league career is to develop some defensive versatility coupled with the ability to put the ball in play. He’ ll have to grind it out, his best chance will be at second base. I liked Gyorko better and I never loved Gyorko very much. I like Peterson about as much as I liked Zack Cox. Oh did I ever get hate mail for not liking Cox. I don’t get that mail anymore. Scout Report 3 Peterson is a pure hitter who won the Mountain West Conference triple crown in 2012. His statistics at New Mexico in 2012 were absolutely exceptional: Peterson hit .419 with 17 HR's and a 33:29 BB/K ratio for the Lobos and firmly established himself as one of the best hitters in the college ranks. Peterson has incredibly fast hands which help him generate a smooth swing with above-average bat speed. He's more than just a power guy as his batting average indicates, and he is one of a select few people who has the potential to hit for both significant power and a high average at the next level. Defensively, Peterson doesn't really have a home and he'll most likely end up as a first baseman or a corner outfielder. He's not a runner, but he won't clog the bases. You're buying the bat here, but it has huge potential and if Peterson comes anywhere close to repeating his 2012 season he should be taken early in 2013. --
