Matsu is indeed very close to China, which is only 9.5 km away at the nearest spot. Thus it has served as a front-line outpost for Taiwan since 1949. Unlike Kinmen, which has endured some incredibly bloody conflicts in the past sixty years, Matsu has memories that are largely more mysterious than painful. The ROC government did not lift military rule over the island until 1992, and it was 1994 when tourists were finally allowed to visit this dream land on the other side of the Taiwan Strait. --
