Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle recently took aside three players riding the playing-time roller coaster to try to clear some things up. Not all was cleared up. "He basically told us we're all playing well," backup power forward Brandon Bass, one of the chosen three, said, "but he didn't know how the rotation was going to go." The other two reserves in that meeting after Tuesday' s shootaround were center Gana Diop and forward James Singleton. Though Bass, Diop and Singleton are not the only ones unsure of their status from game to game, this trio has seen its minutes fluctuate wildly. "It's hard," Bass admitted. "You just have to be mentally tough." All three have registered DNP-CDs. All three also have played major minutes. The inconsistency in playing time has been difficult to deal with at times, especially for Diop and Bass. They came into the season expecting to be key components of a nightly rotation. Bass was Dallas' most consistent frontcourt scorer off the bench last season and perhaps its best player in the first-round playoff loss to New Orleans. Diop, a part-time starter during his first stint with the Mavericks, returned to Big D after signing a five-year deal for $32 million. Bass has logged at least 30 minutes twice this season, but he's also seen games in which he hasn't played until the fourth quarter. Diop recently had a stretch of nine consecutive games with fewer than 10 minutes of playing time. He played at least 20 minutes in five of the first nine games. Singleton was benched for an entire game after starting three straight in late December. "You're human," Diop said of how he deals with the uncertainty. "But you can't stay mad all season. You have to stay ready." Diop and Singleton got into a game against Minnesota in the first quarter Tuesday night. Bass was on the floor to start the second. It could be a coincidence that their early appearances coincided with Carlisle's talk. None of them played more than Diop's 11 1/2 minutes. Mavs guard Jason Terry recently called Carlisle a "mad scientist," evoking memories of former Dallas coach Don Nelson's methods. Several players were surprised by Carlisle's latest move -- starting Antoine Wright at shooting guard against the Timberwolves. Wright played only 21 minutes in the three previous games and never saw the court in six games before that. Demonstrating that roles can change within games, Wright wasn't on the floor to start the third quarter Tuesday. Terry opened in the backcourt with Jason Kidd instead. (To be fair, Tuesday may not have been a good barometer: Carlisle was ejected in the second quarter and the Mavs were down by 22 points at the half.) And it remains unclear, at least for one of the three in the pregame meeting, whether Carlisle wants to eventually establish a firm rotation of perhaps eight or nine players. "I don't know if that's what he wants, but that's what I want," Bass said without sounding frustrated. "I know it's easier for the starters to prepare for the games because they know their roles.
