Magic assistant general manager Otis Smith and vice president of basketball operations Scott Herring crafted a "V-contract" for Battie, a deal that would rise in compensation next season, dip dramatically in 2007-08 and then rise back up over the final two seasons. Battie, who is making $5.2 million this season while averaging 8 points and 5.7 rebounds a game, will make an average of $6.2 million over the life of the four-year deal.
