Ajax had shown great football in the first half, created more than a handful of chances but after 90 minutes there was a 0-2 result on the scoreboard and Ajax had tripped over the last hurdle toward the Champions League. "This is a heavy blow", said coach Henk ten Cate. Thomas Vermaelen was the disappointment incarnate after the match. The Belgian defender walked off the pitch in tears. He must have felt the unluckiest person in the stadium after his own goal in the 77th minute had given FC Copenhagen a pass to the Champions League and Ajax were left with participation in the UEFA Cup. But many things had preceded his error. Ajax started so well, defending a 2-1 advantage from the match in Copenhagen. After 30 minutes, the home side could have had a 3-0 lead. Ryan Babel (post and crossbar), Gabri (just wide) and again Gabri (just missed on a header) could have scored. Ajax played well in the first half and there were more chances, for Rosales, Stam, Babel and Sneijder. "We had at least five or six good chances in the first half", said Ten Cate. "But we did not convert them and our confidence suffered because of it." FC Copenhagen had done little to nothing in the first half. The Danish side seemed to be defending an advantage instead of trying to overcome a deficit. But after Wesley Sneijder saw his free kick stopped by goalkeeper Christiansen, Ajax fell way back. After an hour, Thomas Linderoth took a free kick and the wide-open Michael Silberbauer put it away: 0-1. Stale Solbakken, the coach of the Danish side, said it best after the match. "Ajax became insecure. They were more and more shaky. After an hour they just played the long ball, right in the direction of our tall central defenders." When Urby Emanuelson lost the ball on the offensive half, Copenhagen shot forward and Vermaelen unluckily changed the trajectory of a cross to pass his own goalkeeper, 0-2. The ArenA was in shock. Klaas Jan Huntelaar had one more good chance, but he too hit the crossbar and Ajax were out of the Champions League before they had even reached the group stage. "If it's the other way around, you start flying", said coach Henk ten Cate. "But I already noticed that the team was under pressure. Now there is a chance that the team becomes scared again, when we were just getting rid of that feeling. It's a question of a lot of talking now, as staff we have to express our trust in these players. Our confidence is bruised and we have to fix it." --
