A scan diagnosed the problem, which has dogged Butt since his ￡2.5m summer move from Manchester United. Magpies boss Graeme Souness said: "He has been told he must rest for between four and six weeks. It's an enormous blow for us. "I think he arrived with the injury. It's been niggling him for a while and it's not had a chance to settle down." Butt will be joined on the sidelines for Newcastle's trip to Premiership leaders Chelsea on Saturday by captain Alan Shearer. Shearer has had to admit defeat in his bid to return early from a thigh strain. Like hamstring victim Andy O'Brien, Shearer could be back for the clash with Portsmouth at St James' Park on December 11. However, Souness has been boosted by Robbie Elliott and Ronny Johnsen shaking off knee and groin injuries respectively.
