This really is a make-or-break few days for Michael Owen. If he hits the
goal trail against Middlesbrough today and for England on Wednesday, he can
go on to break Peter Shilton's record of 125 England caps.
But if he continues to fail, Fabio Capello won't hesitate to give him the
same treatment as David Beckham.
Capello hasn't taken long to leave his mark as England manager. His first
act — to leave out Paul Robinson, Beckham and Jermain Defoe — suggests a
man who won't sacrifice his principles for anyone.
He only wants players who are at the heartbeat of their clubs. And what
Owen needs to prove now is that he's at the heartbeat of Newcastle, because
Capello is no sentimentalist.
Let's get the Beckham issue out of the way first. I think Capello was
right to leave him out.
In some ways it was a similar decision to my first England squad when I
left Kevin Keegan out. He was the biggest star in English football but had
just opted to play in the Second Division for Newcastle.
As a manager, you know it's your neck on the line if you lose games and
so you pick the players who are going to make you look good by winning.
Capello won't want to start his England campaign against Switzerland with
a poor performance and result, so he's looked after himself by selecting the
players he believes will do a job.
Beckham deserves to win a hundred caps for what he's done for England and
I'm sure the door isn't closed for him, but the message is out there now that
nobody is an automatic pick. He trained for a few days with Arsenal but the
last time I saw him he was on a plane to Africa and doing keepy-ups on a
beach in Brazil. I don't know how either make you fit to play for England,
even though I'm sure both trips were for commendable causes.
The match against Switzerland may be a friendly, but it's not a benefit
match. What has happened to Beckham can happen to Owen next, but it's in
Michael's own hands.
I've seen him play a few times recently and he's been short of the player
he was. He needs to get his dash back, his movement. I've noticed that the
timing of his runs isn't quite right; he is getting caught offside too many
times by leaving too early.
The good thing for Michael is that, at 27, he is young enough to rediscover
his peak form. And the incentive is there for him to do it.
While the subject of Beckham's 100th cap has become the focus of worldwide
attention, Michael has already played 88 times for his country. He can sail
past the landmark and would even see Shilton's record 125 caps under threat.
If he does that, then Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record won't be beyond
him.
But the time to show he can be the player he was is now. I think he's
played eight times since coming back from injury — enough time to get over
the rustiness.
With Middlesbrough in town for a North East derby, there can't be any
excuses now; it is time for him to show people why Newcastle signed him
for £17 million. And you know how football works — a goal or two today
would set things up nicely for Wembley, where Capello will be watching.
Despite Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch and Wayne Rooney, we still need that
little, quick striker. It's been a good start for Capello, although he will
know the first real test comes this week.
I'm glad Stuart Pearce is on board, a true Englishman who will give his
manager an alternative view to the rest of his Italian backroom team. I'm
interested in who will be captain in John Terry's absence. There are a couple
of good candidates, including Rio Ferdinand, but I would go for Steven Gerrard.
I think he has the respect of everyone, will be an automatic pick for the
next five years and has so much experience of big matches.
I have to commend Ferdinand on his performances for Manchester United this
season. One thing I've noticed is how well he deals with balls that are
played in behind the defence. He is so quick to turn, so important for a
defender in the modern game.
Naturally, I was pleased to see two of my former Newcastle players,
Jermaine Jenas and Jonathan Woodgate, in Capello's squad of 30.
Jenas is really blooming this season — I wish he was still at Newcastle.
If Woodgate stays fit — and it's a big if, admittedly — I think he could
form a central defensive partnership with Ferdinand every bit as good as
Ferdinand and Terry.
He is good on the ball and can defend. But the extra bonus is that he's
quick. He has proper international pace.
Capello has played a blinder so far. Now the real test begins, for him
and for Michael Owen.
● The idea of Newcastle United appointing a director of football is a good
one. A club that size need to have a coherent strategy regarding player
recruitment and youth development; whether Dennis Wise is the right person,
only time will tell. Mike Ashley has the right to give him a go.
My only concern is that I've read that Dennis will spend all his time in
London. I hope that's wrong.
When I was manager at Newcastle, I insisted that the director of football,
Gordon Milne, and the chief scout, Charlie Woods, were based in the North
East. Gordon, who lived in Leicester, bought a flat in Newcastle and was
there from Monday to Friday.
The structure is right but it can only work if the manager and director
of football are a proper partnership. I can see that being made more
difficult when they may be 300 miles apart.
