Dear Carol,
As for the origin of rock 'n' roll, my understanding is that it came out of
blues and country (hillbilly) music. Often some music labeled "blues" sounds
just like rock 'n' roll (e.g. many songs by Muddy Waters, everything by
Hounddog Taylor), and a lot of rock 'n' roll is just blues redone by a rock
band (e.g. many songs by the Rolling Stones). Don't think it originally had
much to do with jazz. Jazz and blues are different, but related, types of
music, with jazz musicians often playing blues numbers, and blues musicians
much less often playing jazz numbers, though some blues artists have
incorporated some jazz elements into their blues.
Hounddog Taylor

Cheers!

And I was out to hurt you
But I've no wish to ever cause you pain
'Cause there's enough in this world of sorrow
I've no wish to add some more to it
