Gig Of The Year? Noel And Gem Hit Manchester For Xfm
It was always going to be a hall-of-famer, but Noel and Gem raised
the bar with a special gig for Xfm as the Oasis pair performed tracks
from their back-catalogue and a special Beatles cover.
You want quality? You’ve got quality. Tonight (December 3) just 400
people joined Noel and Gem from Oasis in the Salford, Manchester’s
Lowry Theatre for an hour plus set of Oasis classics, rarities and
singalongs to mark the release of the band’s ‘Stop The Clocks’
Best Of compilation.
With a typically obtuse setlist, Noel ‘The Guv’nor’ Gallagher led
Gem and former Rolling Stones session musician Terry Kirkbride (on
percussion) through a twelve-song set of Oasis classics taking in
tracks from the band’s early albums and B-sides.
From ‘Cast No Shadow’ to the band’s cover of The Beatles’ to
‘Strawberry Fields’ to amazing reinterpretations of ‘Slide Away’
and 'Whatever' ("This is how it was meant to sound but we f*cked it
up cos we were all on drugs...") to subtle covers of the band's
biggest hits ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, Noel
et al underlined exactly why they’re still musically relevant in
2006, putting indie's new pretenders to shame.
Introduced by Xfm Manchester’s Clint Boon, Noel explained that
the Xfm show was the smallest on their current tour of tiny
acoustic gigs as he propelled the band through everything from
the hits ‘The Importance Of Being Idle’ to the (only slightly)
lesser known B-sides ‘Half The World Away’ and 'Listen Up’.
Answering a typically boisterous Manchester crowd that also
included Manchester City's Joey Barton and Manchester United's
Alan Smith, Noel banterred with the fans in characteristicly
comedic fashion dedicating 'Talk Tonight' to the present former
Arctic Monkeys bass player Andy Nicholson, thanking Clint for his
introduction joking he was, "Really nice - but that didn't stop him
f*cking sackin me" (in reference to his former stint as an Inspiral
Carpets roadie) and dedicating 'Slide Away' to his present other
half.
Keep checking Xfm for a replay of the gig soon in the near future.
The setlist ran as follows:
‘Good To Be Free’
‘Talk Tonight’
‘Fade Away’
‘Cast No Shadow’
‘The Importance Of being Idle’
‘Listen up’
‘Half The World Away’
‘Wonderwall’
‘Whatever’
‘Strawberry Fields’
'Don’t Look Back In Anger’
'Married With Children’
