He loved what he saw in 18-year-old rookie Dwight Howard, the No. 1 pick in thedraft. But he also knew what it meant. They both play power forward. "I'm on the trading block, no question about that," Gooden said Wednesday from California. "I'm on the Magic roster now -- and I'd love to stay my whole career there -- but I also understand this business." Gooden, 22, averaged 11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, mostly in a reserve role behind veteran Juwan Howard, who was sent to Houston as part of the trade involving Tracy McGrady. Instead of playing behind a veteran like Howard, Gooden likely will play behind a highly touted, multitalented rookie. "If you're the No. 1 pick in the draft, the expectations are so high, you're automatically going to be a starter," he said. "And that's fine. He's a physical specimen. I would love to be around and help him. I'm not worried about starting. I'm worried about winning." Gooden has been uneasy about his future in Orlando ever since last season ended in such a disaster. The Magic will have five new starters and a new set of reserves by next season. The trade of McGrady brought Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato. The draft brought Howard and Jameer Nelson. Free agency produced Hedo Turkoglu. All will play key roles this season. The only thing left in the rebuilding process is an upcoming trade -- most likely Gooden. "I think something [a trade] eventually will get done," said Magic General Manager John Weisbrod. "He [Gooden] could be one of the guys [traded], but at this point I don't know if he's any more likely to go than any of the other guys that aren't our new ones." Weisbrod declined to discuss which teams he was talking to about Gooden, but NBA sources have identified Dallas, Cleveland, Minnesota and Golden State as teams that have shown interest. Because they don't want two rookie power forwards on the roster, the Magic likely will trade the rights to second-round draft pick Anderson Varejao, who is from Brazil but played last season in Spain. Varejao already has made arrangements to buy out his contract in Europe. The Magic still are looking to add another veteran frontcourt player for this season, especially if they lose Gooden in a trade. They also will consider keeping Gooden, using him again in a backup role at both forward positions, or even starting him if Howard struggles early in the season. Gooden was the No. 4 pick by Memphis in the 2002 draft, coming to Orlando midway in his rookie season in a trade for Mike Miller. He was outstanding in his only playoff series for the Magic, averaging 14 points and 12.7 rebounds against Detroit (2003). "There are some intriguing things about Drew that make you pause when you talk about moving him. He's a talented, competitive kid," Weisbrod said. "There are some scenarios we're discussing where he is somewhere else. And there are some we're talking about with him right here." Gooden is going into his third NBA season, itching to establish himself and prove he was worthy of being drafted so high. "I'm a player who can get 20 points and 10 rebounds each night if given the opportunity," he said. "A lot of teams are showing interest. I would love to wear a Magic uniform again, but if they can find something better, so be it. I'll understand." --
