AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Returning to his old haunt tonight -- the home of the
Detroit Pistons -- Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill is playing almost like
vintage Grant Hill.

It might come as a shock then when Hill says he's given serious thought to
retiring after next season.

not that surprising.

"Retirement. . . . Yeah, that's a possibility," Hill told the Sentinel.
"That's a definite possibility. That's very real. I'll have to really look
and see where I'm at that point."

Where he'll be is at the end of the seven-year $92-million contract he signed
after leaving the Pistons in 2000.

the seven-time all-star will play on.

fingers crossed that nothing happens between now and then. . . . Five ankle
surgeries, the sixth on the stomach [a sports hernia this season]. . . . You
don't want to be in a situation, 10-15 years from now, where you can't have
an active lifestyle or enjoy your family," Hill said.
"I don't think it's to that degree, but the stress of the NBA season. . . .
The body is not made for that. I'm an example of that."

The Magic will have to make a tough call on Hill after his contract expires.
He turned 33 in October during training camp. If the club decides not to
re-sign him, given his history of injury, Grant intimates that he'll leave
the game rather than leave Orlando.

He'd love to win a title here. But playing in another city, for a contender,
doesn't have the appeal when weighed against his family life. He is married
to Tamia, a recording artist, and their daughter, Myla, turns 3 on Jan. 23.

"If it doesn't work out here and I have to retire. . . . If they [the Magic]
don't want me back, I'll still be at the games. You'll still see me around,"
Hill said.

"It will be a decision on my part and a decision on the team's part.
Hopefully, it will be happy for both sides. I'd love to be here. This is our

Hill expects to meet with the Magic this summer to address his future.

The best guess is that Hill and the Magic will agree to extend his career. It
might be a year-to-year situation or a two-year or three-year contract.

Hill's maximum contract comes off the Magic's salary-cap books after next
season, perhaps allowing them to sign a prized free agent.

Not a lot, likely. Hill doesn't have any idea, but he says money is not an
issue.

Hill is old NBA money, anyway, having made a fortune alone in endorsements
before coming to Orlando.
Sources close to Hill say they wouldn't be surprised if he'd play for the
Magic for the veteran's minimum (about $1.5 million) to close out his career.
Hill badly wants to play as long as he can and ride shotgun with young Dwight
Howard. He was robbed of four prime years by his faulty ankle.
"I really think we're building something here," he said. "I'd like to be
there along for the ride.
"I might not get to the mountaintop with them, but at least I'd like to try
to help this team go in the right direction and really try to finish what was
started. It would be nice to at least see it through, with Dwight, to see how
he develops and with guys we have here, to see how it develops."
Until last season, injuries had prevented Hill from making his return to face
the Pistons at The Palace in Auburn Hills. He received a long, warm ovation
from Pistons fans last Jan. 14.
Grant hopes to hear the cheers a few more times, but who knows after next
season?
"I knew going in this would end and when it ends it ends, you've got to move
on," Hill said. "I'm not trying to get premature, but yeah. . . . retirement.
It's real."
