Several NBA teams have called the Orlando Magic about acquiring point guard Travis Diener, who has a make-good contract with the club for next season. The second year of Diener's deal is only partially guaranteed. "There's been some interest," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said. Diener said he has heard the same through the NBA grapevine. He served as Orlando's third point guard last season as a rookie and will be back in that role behind Jameer Nelson and Carlos Arroyo if he makes the team. Diener has "made it tough on us," said Smith, with his stellar summer-league play. Diener, 6 feet 1 and 175 pounds, has averaged 15.6 points and seven assists per game while committing just two turnovers in three games. After playing spot minutes as a rookie, he said he has been playing freer. "The way I played in college [at Marquette]," Diener said. "I just didn't play that way last year. I got down on myself. I got nothing to worry about. I can't put pressure on myself. You play with that deer-in-the-headlights look, and coaches recognize that." Diener said he wants to remain with the Magic, but added, "I understand the business of basketball." --- --
