We are seeing a lack of effort and maturity at times on the court, and a number of the players are underperforming. Clearly, Orlando isn’t truly ‘home’ for a lot of these guys. Either that, or they’re SO comfortable or SO distracted by people and things around them that the city all of a sudden is a problem. Playing on the road keeps the squad closer together and more focused. No families, no posses, fewer female problems. The effort is there, just not the focus at Amway Center. They’re missing easy lay-ups at home, and much fewer on the road. A lot of that is just the team not having that strong of a bond with the city or the fans. It’s not a valid excuse, but it’s an explanation. These guys need to change up their pregame routines when they come back from this road trip. Drink 10 cups of coffee. Drink 3 shots of Crown Royal. Have a pregame orgy. Something. Anything. Spenser Strode: The record is about where I thought they would be prior to the start of the season. But it becomes more disappointing when you see what the team has been able to accomplish in spurts but unable to sustain over the long haul. The easiest candidate for the player who has been most disappointing is Maurice Harkless. There was a very clear opportunity for Harkless to stake out a prominent role as a contributor, but he has lost the trust of the coaching staff and failed to show the development necessary to warrant consistent playing time. The other disappointing player to me has been Elfrid Payton. While Elfrid has been spectacular at times, his inability to finish easy baskets at the rim is maddening and with defenders sagging five feet off him at all times, he has shown no ability to punish them. His lack of assertiveness on offense seems trivial for a pass-first, defensive minded rookie… but he can get to the rim! I’ve been disappointed with Frye, but also Harkless. That he hasn’t been able to carve out playing time after growing his game last year (and having a big hole with A. On December 6th they were even with my projection at 9-14 after that win in Sacramento. The home struggles have erased what should have been a chance to be the 8th seed or better right now. I had Tracy McGrady-like aspirations for Maurice, so you know I’m disappointed. Elfrid Payton has looked great over the past few weeks. Channing Frye is getting paid the most money this season on this team and has been even more awful than I anticipated defensively, yet his offense has been at best on par with Kyle O’Quinn. Not good. My answer is Andrew Nicholson only because he had a solid summer for the Canadian national team, only to once again lose his confidence with the Magic. He has the tools, but just won’t ever get it together. Not in this town at least. Any semi-decent way to get rid of Nicholson needs to happen. You can talk about playing a full 48 minutes, and you can talk about sharing the basketball all you want, but the proof is in the pudding. Big reason for the stagnant offense. Elfrid Payton has been the only guard over the past month who is doing a good job of stopping dribble penetration. I expect better from Victor and Evan in this regard just based on their lateral quickness. Nikola Vucevic needs more touches while in motion or closer to the basket. Getting him a weak entry pass 15 feet with his back to the basket is doing no one any favors. Lastly, someone needs to get thoroughly pissed off. Saying what needs to be fixed and then not fixing it hasn’t worked out. A little spurt of anger may do the team some good. Jacque needs to start picking up technical fouls. The refs don’t respect him or this roster, and he needs to start fighting for his squad more. The problem is that there aren’t enough fans for the collective voice of change to be loud enough for management to hear. Started Elfrid Payton. Over the weekend, Jacque has figured out it’s better to have Luke Ridnour play backup PG than Oladipo. And yet it’s made no difference at home, but all the difference on the road. The potential coaching uncertainty may also potentially be holding back on trades and roster decisions on Hennigan’s table. I can honestly see the Magic going 3-1 on the road which would make the home struggles even crazier considering they play the Nuggets, Lakers, Blazers (second night of back-to-back), and Chicago on this trip. If the Magic look awful this week, my blame will shift from the players to the coaching staff. Spenser Strode: This is a rare instance where a re-tread household name may be the appropriate coach to bridge the gap between Jacque Vaughn and the coach that is installed once the team is deemed ready to compete for a title. Two names that probably aren’t plausible, that I don’t think would be a long-term fit, but who may be the perfect link from the present to the future would be Scott Skiles and Nate McMillan. Name recognition, proven NBA track records, and coaches that garner respect from their players. If a re-tread were to be targeted, a possibly fired Frank Vogel would be welcomed as well as a coach with USA Basketball roots in Nate McMillan. On the new coach route, Ed Pinckey or the younger Adrian Griffin of the Bulls would meet the defensive mentality. Dipping back into the USA Basketball pool and college ranks, two Virginia schools have interesting candidates in VCUs Shaka Smart and UVAs Tony Bennett – both who coached Payton and Gordon on the U-19 team (sorry Billy D). Another option would be Mike Malone, but I worry that another opportunity for a young coach is going to be yet another variable for us to deal with when trying to assess the rebuild overall. I can’t imagine the PTSD Tobias Harris would have if he re-signs here and Scott Skiles is waiting for him in his office. I like George Karl, but I have no idea if his body can handle the physical toll of a full NBA season. I’d rather go younger. I’m not opposed to Nate McMillan or Mike Malone. I’m not big on Frank Vogel. There just isn’t a candidate in my eyes right now where I’d leap out of my seat and demand Jacque be fired in order to acquire. Shaka Smart and Kevin Ollie are two college coaches who I’d definitely try and interview, but they key listening to what my young core of players thinks of any candidate. Respect is the key here and not necessarily offensive or defensive schemes.
