The Dr. Chun Hui Yen and Wang Pei Yen Scholarship Fund
at
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
This fund honors the memory of Dr. Yen and his wife, acknowledging in particular Dr. Yen’s commitment to public health through his service as a professor at the Peking Union Medical College, his service as Minister for Health for Taiwan and his longstanding association with The Johns Hopkins University.
Income from the Fund is used each year to provide scholarship support to a student from Taiwan or China who has been admitted to The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and who demonstrates financial need as well as academic excellence. Preference is given to students pursuing MPH or DrPH degrees who have expressed an interest in disease control or health systems.
How to apply for the Chun Hui Yen and Wang Pei Yen Scholarship
There is no need for a separate application. Any student admitted to the MPH or DrPH program at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who falls within the criteria outlined above is automatically considered for this scholarship by the School’s Honors and Awards committee. For information on how to apply to The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health please visit our website at
http://www.jhsph.edu/admissions/ . Applications to the School are only accepted online.
How to support the Chun Hui Yen and Wang Pei Yen Scholarship Fund
This year the Fund provided a tuition scholarship of $4,000 to the first Yen Scholar.
Because part of the interest earned by the endowment is reinvested into the endowment each year the principal grows as the fund matures thus generating more funding for the Scholarship. Currently the University’s committee on investments has stipulated that 4% of the earned income on endowments may be expended whilst the rest is reinvested. As tuition for the MPH degree at the School is now $43,680 a year, it is hoped that in addition to the expected growth of the endowment, additional gifts will be
made to the Fund so that eventually the Yen Scholarship can provide full tuition to the recipient.
There are a number of ways to contribute to the Fund. Gifts can be made by check made payable to the Johns Hopkins University, through the transfer of stock or appreciated securities, through a charitable gift annuity or by bequest. For information about these and other ways to give please contact Sally O’Brien, Director of Development at the Bloomberg School of Public Health by telephone at 410-955-5194 or by email at
