Qualitative Researches
I think it still depends on situation.
The equipment can be out of order any time.
You can wait from few weeks to few months for getting it fixed and shipped back.
Sometimes, everything is OK, just somebody forgets to open or close something,
then, a few week/month work becomes rubbish.
This can also happen on modellists; debugging for a few weeks and realising
that is because a missing character in the codes --- some results become
rubbish...
There is also safety problem in some experimental work;
even you think everything is OK and press the button,
somebody can be KO-ed by some accident in the next second.
(Maybe just because a screw fails... something/somebody is screwed!)
So, it doesn't matter of which subject you are doing your PhD,
do thank everybody when you finish the degree.
Doing a PhD, you cannot rely on luck; however,
nothing can be really easy without reasonable luck.
