These are not any high-falootin’ advanced metrics, simply counting stats.
As in, how many groundballs? How many went to the outfield for hits (range)?
How many of those in the infield was there no out (hands)?
In 2015
Pirates are
1st in total number of ground balls
Pirates are
4th of 30 in turning all ground balls into outs (DER)
Pirates are
3rd in preventing ground balls from reaching an outfielder
(range) a lot of this is positioning
Pirates are
11th in getting outs on infield grounders (hands)
Pirates are
3rd in turning a DP if they get a grounder with runner on 1st,
fewer than 2 outs
Pirates are
1st in turning a DP for each batter with runner on 1st, fewer
than 2 outs (helps that pitchers get higher rates of grounders),
the best rate of 2007-2015
