Teasing spurred Pistons assistant to great heights as a player
Terry Foster / The Detroit News
The notes Ron Harper took in class went beyond the reading and
arithmetic assignments teachers gave him.He kept close tabs on
everybody who made fun of his stutter when he raised a hand to
answer questions. He heard the snickers and giggles, and they
hurt, even though Harper was the star basketball player at Kiser
High School in Akron.Harper didn't curse his antagonists. A part
of him actually enjoyed the teasing because he was certain he'd
get his revenge -- during afternoon pickup basketball games."My
friends used to laugh at me every day," Harper said. "But the
first thing they would say when they stepped on the basketball
court was, 'I got Ron.'"I'd say, 'You're not on my team today
because you laughed at me in class. So we are going to go at it.'
I made fun of them back (playing basketball). I got my revenge.
"Now laugh at me. I got my five rings. I got the last laugh."
Ron Harper
Harper,
Harper, 41, enjoyed telling this story in a cramped coaching
office inside the Pistons' practice facility. He always held
on to the saying, "Those who laugh last, laugh best."He was
no fun to play against. He was big (6-foot-6, 220 pounds),
muscular and athletic, and he used old-school tricks to his
advantage.Fueled by revenge, Harper played in the NBA for 16
seasons and got five championship rings with the Lakers and
Bulls. He now hopes to get his first coaching ring with the
Pistons after joining Flip Saunders' staff in the fall, four
years after his retirement as a player. The teasing rang in
Harper's head throughout his playing career -- in high school,
at Miami of Ohio and with four NBA teams."I heard all the
hee-hees and haa-haas," Harper said. "But all that made me a
better player. A much better player."After a standout career
at Miami, Harper broke into the NBA with Cleveland in 1986 as
the eighth overall pick. In Cleveland, he was viewed mostly as
bitter and sullen. Many reporters speculated he would be
uncomfortable talking because of his stuttering problem, so
they kept their distance."Everybody thought I was a mean guy,"
he said. "But when (media-relations personnel) said to talk to
a guy, I showed up and talked to him."I did not shy away from
anything. You can ask me anything, and I will tell you. It might
take me a little longer, but I am going to tell you what is on
my mind if you ask me."Now Pistons players are hearing what is
on Harper's mind. He leads a daily banter and even goes toe-to-toe
(mouth-to-mouth?) with the most prolific talker of all, Rasheed Wallace.
He especially enjoys talking to young players about what it takes
to excel in the NBA.He's also not shy about challenging the
young players to impromptu games of one-on one after practice
-- showing them the old man still has some game left.
He does not power to the basket, as he did during his playing
days, but remains competitive with savvy and a nice jumper.
"The thing about Ron is, he's not afraid to call guys out,"
Saunders said. "If (a player) is not injured and is not doing
his job, he will tell him. Players respect him because he is not
going to sugarcoat it."
Key moment
Harper and Saunders met during Harper's rookie season in Cleveland.
They kept in touch, and last summer Harper expressed an interest in
joining Saunders' staff if he were hired by the Pistons.Harper
believed he was qualified to coach after playing under three legendary
coaches -- Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown and Phil Jackson. He wanted to
learn about the coaching business while not straying too far from his
home of Dayton, Ohio.Jackson called Harper and talked to him about
becoming an assistant with the Lakers. But Harper wanted no part of
the Kobe Bryant-Jackson reunion tour.
"I knew it was going to be a madhouse and a zoo," Harper said.
"I did not want to be involved with that. There is nothing wrong with
starting a job with the right team that has the right attitude, and
there are guys here who know how to play basketball. It is easy to get
the wrong damn job. I did not want to be with a team trying to find
guys to play basketball."Harper came into the NBA as a shooter and
slasher who could score against anybody. In Cleveland, he played
alongside Brad Daugherty, Mark Price and Larry Nance. He averaged
22.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists his rookie season, but
there was mistrust between Harper and the Cavaliers.
During the early stages of the 1989-90 season, he was traded to the
Clippers, along with three future draft choices, for Reggie Williams
and the rights to Danny Ferry.Although Harper continued his scoring
blitz in Los Angeles, he suffered an injured right knee Jan. 16 and
missed the rest of that season and the first 41 games of the following season.
It was a bad break for Harper as a player, but it might have been the
beginning of his coaching career. He studied film more closely and
changed his game. He lost a step but learned other moves to keep
opponents off him. He also used his long body to become one of the
better defenders in the league.
Lenny Wilkens,Larry Brown和Phil Jackson。
No fear
"When you get hurt, you tend to use more of the head games," Harper said.
"And I loved to watch film. Now most guys watched film to see the ooohs
and ahhs. I watched film to see what a guy did."Said Saunders: "He became
a great player by using his head. He understood how to play the game, and
I thought he can bring that to a team as a coach. The guy has five
championships, and he's been through a lot and he knows what it takes to
go through those wars."Plus, Harper played against many of the current
Pistons before he retired in 2002, so there is a connection there.
But he is still trying to separate the player from the coach. He wants to
interact with players and coaches and is trying to find a good blend.
Does he feel like more a player or coach?
"I don't know," Harper said. "I mean, I talk to Rasheed a lot. And I love
talking to Flip and (assistant) Sidney Lowe. It's good to be close to them,
but it's also good to be close to the players.
"I am trying to get on the page where I will be more coach than player.
I am like at a half-and-half thing right now. I'm just having fun."
These days, Harper doesn't think much about his stuttering. But it does
help him stay focused in his new career. He knows some might question his
ability to communicate effectively as a coach.
"Speech was always a difficult thing for me, but I survived," he said.
"The taunts hurt me at times. It has to hurt, but it gave me a desire to
be great."It made me stronger. It made me who I am today, and I am not
scared to say anything and go out and be Ron Harper."
