Jarvis Cocker - "My New Album? It's About Fucking A Lot Of People"

Last week saw the release of Jarvis Cocker's second solo album, 'Further
Complications'. In this guest blog, the former Pulp frontman talks through the
record, track by track.
Further Complications
This song goes back to before I was born. It's got a bit of brass on there,
which is something that I've always thought was the mark of when a band has
really gone off the rails.
Angela
Angela is the girlfriend of our keyboard player, Simon Stafford, but I didn't
realise that at the time. I was singing these words and I noticed that he was
looking at me in a strange way. He said, "Why have you written a song about my
girlfriend?" I'd forgotten that she was called Angela, so I think he thought I
was trying to maybe move in on her. I assured him it was a co-incidence.
Pilchard
This girl at our school wasn't particularly good-looking, but she became
renowned for allowing boys to do things with her… she was referred to as
'Pilchard'. I quite like it being an instrumental because it gives me a chance
to show off my guitar playing.
Leftovers
There is this museum of palaeontology in Paris, I was there one day and saw a
very attractive woman, and I just thought it was strange to be looking at dead
creatures and having feelings of desire towards living creatures.
I Never Said I Was Deep
I'm not deep at all, I am profoundly shallow. Deep is someone who sees into the
depths of the human condition and profoundly shallow is someone who knows
everything about Roy Walker from Catchphrase. I consider it to be quite a
heartfelt song, so much so that I may have 'I Never Said I Was Deep' engraved
on my tombstone.
I Never Said I Was Deep"这句话。
Homewrecker!
Theres a homewrecker within all of us. Well, maybe more the male of the
species. The long sax solo is by the guy who played with the Stooges on Fun
House [Steve MacKay].
Hold Still
For about ten minutes I thought Id lost my son at St Pancras Station. Of all
the places to lose a kid an international train station is probably the worst
you could pick. Immediately you imagine that they're being put on a train to
some weird place on the continent. It was one of the most traumatic experiences
of my life.
Fuckingsong
I bought a new guitar when we were in Los Angeles and I came up with that
mindless riff on it [see intro]. By writing songs you can metaphorically fuck a
lot of people at the same time. This song is about how that's probably the best
way to have a relationship. A song always performs its best each time whereas
with a real person, sometimes they get drunk and can't perform at all.
Caucasian Blues
Blues music was a way for black people to express their frustration and anger
and it's strange that it became the music of choice for middle-aged white men.
I'm quite glad that the record's coming out at this time, with all these people
whinging on about the credit crunch. That's 'Caucasian Blues'.
Slush
I was on this thing organised by Cape Farewell, who take creative people to the
North Pole, and they hope that they produce some kind of work that's informed
by that experience and climate change. One day the North Pole won't be ice any
more, it will be that horrible mucky slush that you get in cities.
You're In My Eyes (Disco Song)
It's quite nice to go out on disco song, innit?
