Dear all,
It is true that there are a lot of homeworks assigned.
Hence, here is some guideline about how to prepare for the finals:
1. I do NOT pick homework questions randomly. Instead, I look for questions
that have a good economic story to tell. This answers my favorite question,
"Why do we care about this?"
In last year's final, Q2 (question 1-7) was the same as Riley 5.1-3, Q3
(question 1-5) was the same as Riley 5.5-6, and Q4 was the same Riley 7.3-6.
However, I added followup questions 8-11 to Q2 to tell the story of how NTU
rewards its professors' publications. In Q3, I added followup questions 6-8
to ask about consumption vouchers. In Q4, the context was changed to
forecasting next year's economy performance.
Therefore, you should expect to see similar patterns in this year's exam as
well. So focus on the homework questions that can tell a good economic story.
2. I do have a preference regarding topics.
In particular, I believe "equilibrium" is the central idea of this course,
and cannot be over-emphasized. Hence, last year 40 out of 50 points (Q2-Q4)
are on equilibrium (Robinson Crusoe, time, uncertainty, etc.).
You should not be surprised if you see similar emphasis again this time.
3. I like to put current events into the exam, so you should not be surprised
if you see questions about the news. However, you should not try to focus on
figuring out what newspaper I read. Instead, just keep your eyes open to
what's happening nowadays.
