Rebounding, effort both go missing.
走了A.Davis和垃圾狗
不过教练还是对於C.Bosh和L.Baxter满怀希望

When the Raptors traded away Antonio Davis and Jerome Williams last
month — and in the process shipped out 19 of the 39 rebounds they
were averaging per game — Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill spoke of
compensating for the void on the boards with something called
"gang rebounding."
The idea was to make up for the lack of frontline bulk by imbuing
each and every Raptor — not only the big guys, but the littler
ones, too — to take responsibility for grabbing a handful of
rebounds every night. Skeptics figured it could never work in the
every-man-is-an-island NBA. And the skeptics haven't been wrong.
Witness last night, when the Raptors were soundly out-rebounded
— not to mention out-hustled and out-scored — by the Orlando
Magic, one of the least remarkable rebounding teams in the league.
Problem was, the whole gang didn't show up to play. Vince Carter
shuffled through an early Christmas break, scoring 17 points but
procuring exactly one rebound, apparently expelling most of his
energy in an ongoing in-game conversation with Magic all-star
Tracy McGrady.
Jalen Rose — the other half of Toronto's $25 million (U.S.)
one-two punch — knew enough to get his hands on a respectable
five rebounds, but he half-speeded it through a 5-for-15 brickfest
in a game in which the only Raptors who earned their keep were
Donyell Marshall and Chris Bosh, who combined for 35 points and
29 of Toronto's 44 rebounds.
It all left O'Neill banging the scorer's table in rage before
taking the drive to his upstate New York lake house to ponder
his club's deficiencies over a three-day break that begins today.
Before he left, the coach pointed out the obvious; that his
size-depleted club is getting clobbered by front lines that w
ouldn't scare some college teams.
Now that the post-trade giddiness has worn off, now that the
Raptors, .500 before the deal, are one game over .500 after it,
general manager Glen Grunwald is under pressure to deliver a
front-court player of note to remedy the anemia. Last night,
after all, marked the Raptors' second sellout of the season,
their first in more than a month. But performances like this
one don't bring the customers back.
"Inside, we're getting beat up," said O'Neill. "Chris (Bosh)
and Lonny (Baxter, who had four rebounds in 20 minutes off
the bench) are young guys who are forced to play better guys
night in and night out. And when they have to do that, that's
going to take a toll on those guys.
"There's a myriad of problems on the defensive end and the
boards. ... We need to have our perimeter (players) give us
four or five rebounds apiece."
Carter didn't uphold that end of the bargain. But he seemed
to blame the loss on the NBA rules committee that instituted
the use of zone defences before last season, chastising the
Magic for playing the zone defence that befuddled Hogtown's
not-so-savvy floor generals.
"It's the worst part of the game right now," Carter said of t
he 1-2-2 defence that continually forced Toronto into
quick-and-long jumpers.
Carter played so poorly in the third quarter on both ends that
O'Neill took him out of the game for more than five minutes.
But as for how exactly it was possible for a Mr. Half Man,
Half Amazing, one of the highest jumpers in the NBA, to occupy
a court for 36 minutes and not have more than a single rebound
fall into his meat-hook hands, Carter was silent. How could he
only get two and three rebounds, respectively, in last week's
losses to Dallas and Miami? The only answer is effort — as in
the team co-captain, though he often shows flashes of offensive
brilliance, isn't giving a consistent one.
"Any time you're struggling, you're looking for anyone to step up.
You'd hope it'd be Vince or Jalen or one of those guys," said O'Neill.
"You're not going to win many NBA games with that kind of effort."
Indeed, and the Raptors are not going to go much better than .
500 with this kind of on-court leadership, this kind of undersized team.
