Top Prospects Likely Safe By: Jerry Beach Date: Jul 29, 2006 Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has proven himself a versatile yet cautious deal-maker at the trading deadline. He’s not afraid to shake up the roster, as he proved when he dealt Nomar Garciaparra July 31, 2004. Yet he’s more likely to tinker with the roster, as he did in 2003 and 2005. (FREE PREVIEW OF PREMIUM CONTENT) And when he does trade, he’s probably not going to deal any of the Sox’ top prospects. In addition, those he does deal aren’t likely to haunt the Sox. Since 2003, Epstein has made 14 trades between July 1 and Aug. 31. He has traded 12 minor leaguers in those deals, only three of whom have since reached the majors: Freddy Sanchez (traded to the Pirates in July 2003 for Jeff Suppan), Chip Ambres (traded to the Royals last July for Tony Graffanino) and Matt Murton (traded to the Cubs along with Garciaparra in 2004). Sanchez has led the NL in batting much of the season and made the All-Star team, but despite hitting .300 or better in each of his final three seasons in the organization, he received just 50 big league at-bats with the Sox. Ambres was signed as a six-year minor league free agent prior to the 2004 season and was viewed as an organizational player by the Sox even after he hit .294 with 10 homers, 50 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 84 games for Triple-A Pawtucket prior to his trade to the Royals. And Murton hit .296 with 13 homers and 84 RBI in 575 at-bats between short-season Single-A Lowell and Single-A Sarasota in 2003 and 2004, but he didn’t break out until he reached Double-A with the Cubs last year. Only four other prospects dealt by the Sox in July or August the past three years are even at Triple-A: Kenny Perez, Andrew Shipman, John Hattig and Phil Dumatrait. So judging by Epstein’s past, which current Sox minor leaguers could be on the block over the next two days? A source indicated Friday none of the Sox’ top prospects appeared likely to be dealt. That means the likes of Pawtucket outfielder David Murphy, Pawtucket infielder Dustin Pedroia and Greenville pitchers Clay Bucholz and Michael Bowden should be safe. Jacoby Ellsbury, the Sox’ top pick in the 2005 draft, would appear to fit into that group, but with Coco Crisp locked in long-term in centerfield and Ellsbury thus far lacking the power to play a corner outfield position, he might be the Murton of this group—the player the Sox must part with if the right opportunity arises. Ellsbury certainly earned his recent promotion to Double-A Portland, but might that be as much a showcase as a reward? Ellsbury’s defense is already considered major league caliber by many, so he could be an enticing target for out-of-contention teams looking for a prospect who can make a quick impact. Other mid-range prospects who could be trade bait include Portland outfielder Brandon Moss, who is still young enough (21) to have considerable upside but has been passed on the organizational totem pole by Murphy and Ellsbury. Jay Johnson has put up some impressive numbers at three levels this season, but the Sox’ willingness to demote him to Single-A Greenville after nine impressive games at Portland speaks volumes for what the club thinks of his long-term potential. Kyle Jackson put up monster numbers at Single-A Wilmington but is struggling at Portland and is already in his fifth season in the chain. Mike James, Jeff Natale and Andrew Pinckney have all enjoyed extended success at the Single-A level but are also older than most of the competition. Hartford Courant reporter Dave Heuschkel wrote this week Kason Gabbard’s spot start for the Sox last week could have been a showcase. --
