James game no slam dunk
Rockets' cap issues make sign-and-trade deal a possibility

The Rockets moved a few steps closer to bringing Mike James back to Houston
, but they also got a pretty good idea of how far they need to go.
The Rockets began the free-agency period at 11:01 p.m. Friday with coach
Jeff Van Gundy ringing the bell at James' house in Houston while general
manager Carroll Dawson called James' agent, Bill Duffy.
The only hitch was that James, whose workout ran late, was not there when
Van Gundy reached James' door. But the two did visit a short time later.
"Everybody has an open mind," Duffy said. "From what I was told, they had
a very good talk."
The Rockets have made their preference for the 31-year-old James clear, and
James has been unusually outspoken about his interest in playing for the
Rockets again. But putting them together won't be that simple.
Duffy said the Rockets are one of "numerous teams" that have already reached
out to James. Duffy would not specify who else is interested. Atlanta, one
of just five teams with cap space, is believed to be pursuing the 6-2 guard
.
The Rockets are over the cap. Barring a sign-and-trade deal with James' current
team (the Raptors), the Rockets can offer only their mid-level exception
, expected to begin at roughly $5 million.
The Hawks are targeting several point guards and are especially interested
in veterans such as James, Speedy Claxton or Sam Cassell as opposed to younger
prospects such as Marcus Banks. Especially in a short-term contract, they
have the spending room to offer more than the Rockets.
Asked if James was open to the mid-level exception, Duffy said, "That's going
to be up to Mike James. Right now, he's just keeping an open mind."
But the Rockets can try to work a sign-and-trade with the Raptors using their
$4.2 million trade exception.
The Raptors are unlikely to want contracts back, making the Rockets' trade
exception a potential advantage because in a sign-and-trade deal, the Rockets
can offer 12.5 percent annual raises, as opposed to the 8 percent raises
permitted in free-agent deals.
"It's a concept to consider," Duffy said. "We haven't gotten there yet. A
sign-and-trade is something we could pursue."
Duffy said that as much as James would like to play in Houston, he also wants
to consider his options before making a decision in about two weeks.
Players cannot sign free-agent contracts until July 12.
