Here to Stay?
Rockets guard John Lucas is making push to be on the team's roster next season
By Damien Pierce
Rockets.com
LAS VEGAS - John Lucas III had only one gripe about being a ball boy for his
father's team back in the mid-'80s.
He never understood why he had to leave the floor during warm-ups.
"I used to shoot before all the other players got on the floor and I never
understood why they forced me off the court once they got on it," Lucas said.
"I've always wanted to stay on the floor and shoot with the other guys."
He might get a full-time opportunity to do that this fall.
After displaying one of the most impressive performance among all the players
at this past week's Toshiba Vegas Summer League, Lucas is making a serious
push to spend the next NBA season in a Rockets uniform.
The former Oklahoma State point guard, who is the son of former Rockets guard
John Lucas, guided the Rockets to five consecutive summer league wins over the
past week after averaging a team-best 23.4 points and 6.4 assists per game.
He routinely nailed fade-away jumpers and was almost always the quickest
player on the floor. Whenever the Rockets needed a big bucket or play, Lucas
was the one to do it.
Besides maybe a few gamblers, no one had a better week in Vegas than Lucas.
"He had a great week in Vegas," Rockets assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau
said. "He is becoming more confident and gaining experience. It's just a
matter of time before he is an NBA point guard."
The Rockets could be the team that gives him that opportunity.
The team is in the market for a reserve point guard to spell starter Rafer
Alston and Lucas proved this week that he has a good grasp of the team's
playbook. He played briefly with the team last season.
He was typcially getting other players in the right place as the team's floor
general this week.
Beyond that, the second-year player showed off a more consistent jumper than
his rookie season and had little trouble getting to the basket.
He believes he'll be in a NBA uniform in the fall.
"My performance this week helped me out a lot," Lucas said. "I don't have any
control on whether the Rockets or any other team out there offers me a chance
to be on a roster. But I think I showed people that I can play in the NBA. I
just hope someone gives me a chance."
The knock on Lucas is his size.
Since he is only 5-foot-11, opponents could expose his lack of height by
constantly postin him up.
Lucas, however, isn't convinced that he'd be a defensive liability. Despite
his size, no one had much luck backing him down in Las Vegas.
"I showed this week that my height isn't a problem," Lucas said. "I played
good defense, I scrapped and I took charges."
Even though Lucas' size is a concern, Thibodeau sees plenty of upside in the
guard.
"The thing I like about John is that he can do a number of different things,"
said Rockets assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau, who served as Houston's
summer league coach. "He has a great skill of shooting the ball and he is a
terrific pick-and-roll player. He has shown this week that he is ready for an
opportunity in the NBA."
Lucas would love for that opportunity to come with the same team that he once
served as a ball boy for.
He's never been more ready for it.
"I would love to play for the Rockets," Lucas said. "I love playing for
Coach (Jeff) Van Gundy, but they have to make a decision that's best for them.
I've just got to wait and see what happens."
