2005 In Review http://www.andyroddick.com/aboutandy/2005 Andy Roddick has won five tournaments this year making his career total 20. Andy Roddick is the only ATP player this year to win on all four surfaces Andy Roddick joins elite players such as Federer, Becker, Borg, Courier, Sampras and McEnroe in finishing inside the world’s top three for three consecutive years. Andy Roddick has won 59 matches this year with only 14 losses. These are only some of the impressive stats that America’s leading tennis player, Andy Roddick, has accumulated in 2005. Although his season came to an early end due to injury, Andy has had a tremendous year which saw him reach the semi finals of the Australian Open and once again getting through to the final at Wimbledon. Andy started 2005 in terrific form, enjoying a successful run at the Australian Open, only stopped by an inspired Lleyton Hewitt. Shortly afterward he picked up title number one of the season on the hard courts in San Jose where he overcame France’s Cyril Saulnier in the final. “There’s probably five percent of the year that you feel like you’re playing really good tennis and this was one of those matches. I’ll give today’s performance an eight out of ten - you always want to leave ceiling room” Andy said following victory. More sterling performances from Andy saw him reach the semis at Indian Wells and then go on to win in Houston, picking up his second title of the season, this time on clay. Playing in his home state of Texas made the tournament victory that bit more satisfying for Andy – “To play well here year after year is great. To have your friends watching, your parents watching, it makes it special.” As Nadal made sure no one else got a look in during the clay court season, Andy found more success in June when he arrived in London. He played some super tennis on the grass courts at Queens Club and won the title again, for the third time in three years. He was so happy after his victory he even asked Sue Barker out on a date! At SW19 Andy thrilled his loyal fans and the British public on his great run through to the final. Unfortunately he came across arguably one of the best players ever in the final and despite his very best efforts, was powerless to stop Roger Federer from regaining his Wimbledon title. But Andy couldn’t be kept down for long and he bounced back to enjoy a successful summer hard court swing, reaching the final in Cincinnati and picking up title number four. He fought off a rejuvenated James Blake in the Washington final (on hard courts once again) to pick up his 19th career title. “I feel comfortable here,” Andy said. “It is easier to go back to a place where you have good memories. That’s the case with everything, including tennis.” After disappointment in New York, Andy’s mojo declared “redemption does not hit the snooze button” and sure enough, he and Andy were re-united for a successful Davis Cup tie against play off hopefuls Belgium. Andy’s two wins helped the US secure their place in the 2006 world group. As he came to Europe for the second time in 2005, Andy made his mark at the European Indoor Tournaments by winning in Lyon. The title in France was won on indoor carpet making Andy the only player to have won on all four main surfaces this year. With his parents in attendance Andy said, “I played some my best tennis today and didn’t really do very much wrong. I think this is probably one of my best matches of the year.” This was Andy’s 20th career title, an incredible achievement for the 23 year old who also claimed his 300th career victory in Lyon. Unfortunately, just as Andy was showing some great form, a back injury forced him to withdraw from Shanghai. It was a huge blow to the tournament that had already lost Safin and Hewitt, but Andy was confident it would still be a roaring success for all the fans. “I realize the tremendous amount of time and effort the ATP and the Chinese government have spent on the event, and know it will be a huge success. I look forward to getting healthy and working towards qualifying for Shanghai next year.” Andy finished the season ranked number three in the world, with this achievement he joins Roger Federer among the world’s elite who have finished inside the top three for three consecutive years. The other great names to have achieved this are Becker, Borg, Connors, Courier, Edberg, Llendl, McEnroe, Sampras and Wilander. To have his name among such tennis legends is testament to the outstanding year Andy has had.
