The Giants have signed Tony Pena Jr. -- the shortstop-turned-reliever -- to a
minor-league contract, one major league source told FOXSports.com on Friday.
Pena would earn a base salary of $650,000 if he spends all of 2010 in the
majors.
Once viewed as Kansas City's potential shortstop of the future, Pena
struggled offensively and moved to the mound midway through this year. He
went 1-2 with a 2.33 ERA over 10 outings in the Royals farm system. (All but
one was at Class A.)
Pena, 28, became a free agent after the season and is currently pitching for
Aguilas of the Dominican Winter League. He is 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA in 17
