Entering Tuesday, Belt owned a .517 batting average (15-for-29) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in nine games since returning to the Minors. His .622 on-base percentage and .862 slugging average almost seem fictional. Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged that the notion of bringing back Belt has been a primary topic of discussion among Giants officials, particularly with the club struggling offensively. "We've talked about the pros and cons of making that kind of move," Bochy said. Belt, San Francisco's Opening Day first baseman who has been playing mostly outfield with Fresno, was optioned to Triple-A after batting .192 in 17 games for the Giants. He also struck out 13 times in 52 at-bats. But, said Bochy, "He looks like a man determined to get back up here." That might not happen, with Mark DeRosa and Andres Torres possibly ready to be activated from the disabled list within a couple of weeks. Bochy said that Belt "ideally" would stay in the Majors the next time he's promoted. But he didn't rule out summoning Belt temporarily. Bochy tells hitters to relax, make adjustments NEW YORK -- Having been shut out three times in their previous six games, the pregame hitters' meeting that the Giants conduct before the start of each series acquired a little more urgency Tuesday. "I just reminded them to be who they are and relax a little bit," manager Bruce Bochy said, adding that he emphasized the need for each hitter to make the adjustments that are required of them day to day and even at-bat to at-bat or pitch to pitch. The Giants appeared to have absorbed the message by the third inning of their series opener against the Mets. That's when they went 3-for-6 with runners on second or third. Ryan Vogelsong and Aaron Rowand rapped RBI singles and Mike Fontenot stroked a two-run single. The Giants were abysmal with runners in scoring position on the first two stops of this three-city trip, hitting .071 (3-for-42) in those situations. Worse yet, they didn't even give themselves many chances to fail in Monday's 2-0 loss at Washington, as they had just two at-bats with a runner in scoring position -- none after the first inning. "What you want to do is create more opportunities," Bochy said. "We're not doing that." Fontenot bats third in opener vs. Mets NEW YORK -- Seeking fresh ways to generate offense, manager Bruce Bochy used Mike Fontenot in the batting order's No. 3 spot for Tuesday night's series opener against the New York Mets. Fontenot began the game as the Giants' top hitter on their current trip with a .353 average (6-for-17). His presence proved effective in the third inning, when San Francisco's four-run rally crested with his two-run single. Batting third wasn't completely foreign to Fontenot, who correctly recalled that he last filled that role in 2007 with the Chicago Cubs. He did so in three consecutive games (July 20-22). Seeing his name occupying such an elevated spot on the lineup sheet didn't faze Fontenot, though he said, "I didn't expect to be there." Aubrey Huff hit third in 25 of San Francisco's previous 28 games. Buster Posey filled that slot in the other three games. Worth noting The Giants announced that surgery to remove a fractured hamate bone from third baseman Pablo Sandoval's right hand proceeded smoothly. Sandoval is still expected to be sidelined from four to six weeks. ...
