The center fielder wears rubber cleats, which are slightly more forgiving than metal spikes. His cleats come with custom-made soles for enhanced protection. Torres also wears a rubber pad around his left heel. He devotes plenty of extra time to stretching the heel before and after games. All of this has helped Torres remain physically sound. "I'm feeling better every day," he said. Staying on the field has helped Torres establish some offensive consistency. Entering Tuesday, he had hit .421 (8-for-19) since leaving the disabled list May 10. DeRosa looks to capitalize on increased time DENVER -- Mark DeRosa has his health. Now he wants to regain his stroke. Finally receiving a chance to play regularly, DeRosa hasn't yet capitalized on the opportunity. The Giants' veteran utility man, whom manager Bruce Bochy intends to use as San Francisco's primary third baseman while Pablo Sandoval is sidelined, entered Tuesday batting .188 with one extra-base hit in 32 at-bats. He also was hitless in his previous 18 at-bats. DeRosa's average contrasts with the .272 lifetime figure he had compiled in roughly 11 seasons entering this year. "I'm late, I'm rolling over sliders, all the pretty obvious signs of being in a little funk," said DeRosa, who has overcome inflammation in his left wrist. Said Bochy, "It's a case of him getting his timing. He needs to get it soon, because we're sputtering offensively." This is essentially the beginning of the season for DeRosa, whose wrist problems have limited him to 16 games. For his career, he has hit .255 in March/April, his second-lowest average of any month. "I've always been a slow starter," DeRosa said. "I obviously would love to do a little more. But it is what it is. Now I just have to keep grinding." Freddy Sanchez sits with sore left knee DENVER -- Second baseman Freddy Sanchez was out of the Giants' starting lineup for Tuesday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies with swelling in his left knee. Sanchez's knee began bothering him increasingly toward the end of Monday night's game, manager Bruce Bochy said. Sanchez had a busy evening, going 3-for-4 and assisting on four putouts. Sanchez had appeared in 38 of San Francisco's first 40 games, starting 36. Mike Fontenot replaced Sanchez at second base. Chris Haft is a reporter for MLB.com.
