Would the Magic be interested in trading Dwight Howard to the 76ers? Now before anyone falls all over themselves about the idea that the Sixers were actually talking about a trade for Howard, the most talented center in the league as well as the most coveted free agent to hit the market next summer, take a breath and a pause. We’ve had different conversations with them and LA over the last three weeks, and talking about different things. Bynum came into the conversation with us at that time. It took some time. It didn’t get out over the course of a lot of conversations. It just didn’t happen overnight. No, instead the key player in the deal was the No. 15 pick in last June’s draft, Harkless. If Harkless wasn’t in the deal, then Orlando was out. And if Orlando was out, Howard wasn’t going to the Lakers and Bynum wasn’t headed to Philly. I was loathed to include him in it. When you look at the bottom line, you’ve got to give up something to get something. If we didn’t include Harkless in this deal, we wouldn’t have been able to do this deal. He is a free agent when the season ends and previously he had expressed an interest only in re-signing with the Lakers. However, Thorn believes that as soon as Bynum gets to Philadelphia and spends time with coach Doug Collins and his new teammates, that the Sixers will have a great chance to re-sign him. Our feeling is he’ll like it here and he’ll want to continue his career here.” Meanwhile, there is that one center the Sixers didn’t get, the one who gave the team a chance to get a foot in the door.
