"When [Simmons is] ready to go to the court, my intention is to give him the ball and let him be the point guard," Brown said. "That's the plan. That doesn't just happen. It takes a little bit of time to introduce him." After Simmons was drafted No. 1 overall in the June draft, the 76ers always envisioned him becoming a point-forward in the mold of the Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, but that was something that was expected to take a season or more to crystallize. Even with the Jones fracture Simmons suffered to his right foot in September delaying the 20-year-old's NBA debut and robbing him of meaningful development time, it seems the 76ers are comfortable throwing him into the fire right away at the new position, which could result in some inconsistent production initially. Starting point guard Jerryd Bayless would likely move to an off-the-ball role to accommodate Simmons, who showed aptitude as a passer and skills as a playmaker throughout summer-league play. As for a timetable for Simmons' return, the 76ers have yet to offer up a concrete target date, but it's generally expected that the rookie will be back at some point in January, assuming he continues to progress positively in his rehab.
