Our sport is very independent. You go out there on the ice all alone, you
skate your heart out, and you let the chips fall where they may.
It's funny, because a lot of people have this idea that if we are competitors,
we always have to be competitors off the ice. But that's not always the case.
It's hard, because everybody wants that gold medal. Everybody wants to
skate well, everybody wants to win. But unfortunately there's only one spot.
And we might be friends, but when it comes push to shove, I want to be in
that position.
I always say, "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger," and coming
home after Nagano, I felt like, "OK, I have another chance. I'm young. I can
still do it. I'll only be 21 in 2002. I mean, what the heck?"
I think if I had won the gold, I would still be here. What intrigues me about
skating is that it pushes me. I just love competing. I've always been a
competitor.
