Boris Becker won the 1995 ATP Tour World Championship and then the 1996 Australian Open, and Pete Sampras claimed the 1996 ATP Tour World Championship, before going on to win the 1997 Australian Open. As the reigning Wimbledon champion, Federer is the first player since Pete Sampras to win Wimbledon one year and the Australian Open the next. Pete Sampras won his first Wimbledon crown in 1993 and went on to claim his first of two Australian Open titles in 1994. Federer is now guaranteed the No. 1 spot on the ATP Entry Ranking. He will become the 23rd player and first Swiss man since the introduction of the world rankings in 1973 to hold the No. 1 position. Semifinalist Juan Carlos Ferrero will move up from No. 3 to No. 2 and Andy Roddick goes down to No. 3, having held the top spot since 3 November 2003. Federer's previous best Australian Open results have been round of 16 finishes here for the past two years. He lost last year to David Nalbandian 64 36 61 16 63, and in 2002 to Tommy Haas 76 46 36 64 86, having held a match point leading 6-5 in the final set.
