It brings us face-to-face, as F. : Scott Fitzgerald put it so well, with something "commensurate with our : capacity for wonder." : 美丽的事物会激发我们，让我们知道超乎非凡是可能的。也因为美丽的事物太不平凡， : 所以我们对於美，总是处於敬畏之中。费滋杰罗诠释得很好，「美景使我们看见自己心 : 中所拥有的不可思议。」 Awe 用「敬畏」还蛮有距离感的 XD When beauty puts someone in awe, it feels more as if the observer is dumbfounded. 例如说前面的女人掉了东西，我拍一拍 她的肩膀告诉她，没想到转过身来她竟然是林志玲！ 在我的解读里，这种被吓傻的心情就是原文所指的。 Fitzgerald 的这句话很棒，但你稍微有点误解了？ 这里的 commensurate 是一种比较词，就是「ａ与ｂ对等」。所以看到这句要去找 ａ跟ｂ分别是什麽。美是其中之一，那与美对等的就是 "our capacity for wonder"。 Fitzgerald 想说的是「人对於不可思议的东西所能感受到的赞叹是无边无际的」。 这种赞叹的感情有多麽伟大呢？跟无上的「美」足以对等的。 要怎麽译才漂亮，我就暂时不想了 XD 抱歉！ : Beauty assures us that life offers it, and that we can find more if we seek : more.It affirms that while life is far from perfect, it offers many nearly- : perfect things. : 尽管生活中有许多不完美，美丽的事物之所以存在，就是像我们保证，只要我们愿意寻找 : ，生活本身仍然给予我们很多的美物，许多近乎完美的事物。 第一小段很烦。有点像 circular argument.因为美存在，所以我们知道它存在。 感觉这个还蛮棘手的 XD 你理解应该无误，但写出来句型不同，导致译文与原文有微妙的差距... 我会这样翻： 「美」，让我们能确信生命中它是存在的。而我们越去找寻它，能找到的美就更多。 美的存在，使我们了解到虽然人生绝非完美，但生命却赋与我们许多近乎完美 的事物。 : When the beauty is a human creation, it reminds us of what we can accomplish. : It raises our standards, and our hopes, and speaks well of us. : When we own something beautiful, it acts as a mirror that reflects on us; we : feel that it is a part of us, and we are part of it. : 尽管「美」是人类创造出来的，它让我们了解我们所能做到的。它提高了我们的标准，我 : 们的希望，也称赞我们。当我们拥有一件漂亮的东西，这样东西就像镜子一样反映我们的 : 一举一动。我们感觉到它是我们的一部分，同时，我们也是它的一部分。 这里你少译了「When」。要有 if 的感觉啊！ 若观察到的「美」，是由凡人所创作出来的，我们便想起人类是能达成伟大的事。 它提升了我们对自己的期望，并赞许同为凡人的自己。 後半句还ｏｋ。 : And could it be that an appreciation of beauty is among the few things that : distinguish us from all other animals? Do apes or owls ever stop in the : presence of something beautiful, and simply contemplate it? : Beauty has such force that it compelled Kahlil Gibran to insist that we live : only to discover it. "All else," he continued, "is a form of waiting." : 难道，审美观就是人类与其他动物不同的少数之一的特点吗？猩猩或是猫头鹰看到美丽的 : 东西，都不曾停下来，去想想那是什麽吗？ 我会建议你把「难道」换成「而或许」。嗯.... 不太会解释为什麽，但感觉上这样译会 比较精准。 第二句也是建议你把「都不曾」，改成「会停下来去想想那是什麽吗」。 我猜你是因为有 "ever" 这个字，所以才会译成「都不曾」，不过译成这样， 读起来有种 accusatory 的语气，好像说「那些动物才不会这样呢」。 而实际上原文比较像是「我猜人跟动物不同就是人会欣赏『美』。 我不太确定，但动物会吗？」 後面你漏掉一整句喔　＝　＝ chingfen 译得还不错（用词上我会建议作一些小调整，但理解是完全正确的） 你可以去参考看看。 : These thoughts come to me when I think of those discussions with clients : about making something better. What about making it beautiful? : Might we gain anything from that? I ask. : Need I have asked? : 当我和几个客户在讨论如何使产品更好时，这些想法突然出现在我脑海。要是我们让一个 : 产品变得好看呢？ : 我们会从中得到什麽吗？　我问 : 或是，我还需要问吗？ 不太确定你有没有注意到，因为译文这麽写，诠释起来有些模糊的地方... （但 chingfen 那篇我确定没有打到要害） 关键点在 "making something better" vs "making it beautiful"。 回到第一段，作者是以 marketing 还有 client advisor 的角度在看这些产品。 要让产品更有价值，就是这里指的 "making [it] better"。 If we read between the lines, we may infer that: the author is rather helpless when he is doing his job, in that his clients may often want to improve physical specifications of products, and in turn neglect the value of making products beautiful. "Need I have asked" 则是在感叹说「追求美应该是自然的、本能的、预设该作的」。 大概是这种感觉。 大部份用讲评，而没有直接译出来给你参考，一方面是希望能鼓励你再想想， 自己找出最适合的译法，另一方面也是因为我能力有限，或许我能想得出来， 但要花太多时间了 XD --
