Using five kinds of body languages to convince your audience What is your audience concerned about the most when you are giving a presentation? Most people assume the information conveying from this presentation is the answer for this question. However, if what we want to get is merely the information, there is no need to particularly participate in a presentation. Instead, we can ask the presenter to send his/her slides to us, right? Presenters persuade their audience to look at the meanings behind the messages. The information on the slides only helps the audience to understand what presenters hope them understand. Since the process of convincing is not simply to convey information, what else? To convince is not to manipulate. The user guide of an oven helps us to manipulate the oven, but there is no such similar handbook to teach us how to manipulate our audience. Convincing is to let your audience see what you want them to see. What’s more, they need to get sufficient access to your five kinds of “body language ” to determine if they will believe you. Your audience can see your eyes, face, hands and body and hear how confident you are in the content from your presentation. Let’s talk more about these five kinds of body languages. First of all, your eyes. If you are looking at me giving a presentation and wondering what I am talking about is true or not, you are not only listening to me but also looking at my “eyes”. If “What I want is your money.” conveying from my eyes but I say “This training is good for you.”, you will believe my eyes not what I tell you. In addition, audience will scan presenters’ “facial expressions”. They tend to believe those who with smiles, take things easy and look at their audience. The third one audience will notice is presenter’s “gestures”. If there is something presenters what to conceal, usually they will hold back their hands. Open gestures mean honesty. Audience will unconsciously notice how often you open your hands, and how open your hands are? The fourth body language is your “pose”. How do you stand? Where do you stand? How do you move when giving a presentation? Audience believe it is not a good idea that the presenter who face to them always stand behind a rostrum. The rostrum not only blocks most part of your body but also seems to remind your audience it is a political speech. Politicians usually do not have good reputations. Finally, audience will get some clues from presenters’ “voices”. For example, if I don’t believe myself, how can I expect you to believe my message? The answer is in my voices. Those presenters who believe themselves will not hurry to give all the information. They will make a pause, give some examples and interpret the same concept or idea from different perspectives. Although there are five kinds of body languages as clues, audience may misunderstand the content of the presentation. Nevertheless, these are not their faults but presenters’. Many presenters are too nervous to aware they gave wrong body languages to their audience. Remember I talked about how to overcome being nervous?
