标题[问题] 关於standard version & widescreen version

在下购入三区华纳发行的正版港版灵慾春宵(Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?)
DVD为单碟双面(放入光碟机时上下倒置读取不同版本)
有Standard Version和Widescreen Version两种。
ISBN: 0790732254
播放设备: 个人电脑，萤幕为4:3(17寸)
IMDB上查询此片Aspect Ratio的技术细节是:

此片是1966年好莱坞使用Spherical 35mm制作的宽萤幕电影(1.85:1)
在DVD包装盒背後载明:
Standard Version: Formatted from its original version to fit your screen.
Widescreen Version: Presented in a "matted" widescreen format preserving
the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition."
Standard Version播放时，片头出现
This film has been modified as follows from its original version: it has been
formatted to fit your screen.
我的想法是，电影的原始版本为1.85宽萤幕，选Widescreen Version播放应该比较好。
Standard(4:3)播放出的版本，应该是左右两边剪裁去除，或者是用PAN&SCAN，
Widescreen 应会比 Standard 看得到的画面要多(多出原本该有的左右边画面)
但我实际拨放的情形是:

真正的情形是4:3全萤幕看到的反而比宽萤幕来的多，
宽萤幕上下画面消失了。
但这部电影并非使用Super 35mm拍摄。
请问怎麽会出现这种情形?
我的理解哪边有错误吗?
