Maybe you can try Rockville or Gaithersburg, or try some studios along the red line toward Rockville. Usually, it takes about 20 minutes (by metro) to go from Shady Grove to Medical Center. My friend rents a studio (very small) in downtown Bethesda. Her rent is $1900, utilities not included. It's really really expensive.
