网志版：http://tinyurl.com/7l9xvqe 每年过年总要有首应景的歌，今年是龙年，要找有「龙」（dragon）的歌并不容易，我只 知道这一首——Peter, Paul and Mary 的〈魔龙帕夫〉（Puff, the Magic Dragon）。 "Puff, the Magic Dragon" 是 Peter, Paul and Mary 1963 年美国 Billboard 流行榜 的亚军曲，在成人歌曲榜则夺下了冠军，是他们早期最成功的一首曲子。这首常被视为是 「童谣」的歌曲（曾入围当年葛莱美奖的「最佳儿童录音」奖），初入榜时位居第 61 名 ，9 周之後进占亚军席次，有趣的是，拒其於冠军之外的，是当时年方十四的女童 Little Peggy March 的冠军曲 "I Will Follow Him" ——大人唱儿歌，还比不上小少 女唱情歌来的受欢迎。 一尾毒龙 但这首儿歌，也是流行音乐史上最被人所「误解」的曲子。1964 年，美国着名的《新闻 周刊》（Newsweek）指出，这是一首歌颂吸食大麻的药物歌曲，这只可爱的「魔龙帕夫」 从此被抹黑成为一尾「毒龙」。 虽然乐团成员，也是歌曲作者的 Peter Yarrow（Peter, Paul and Mary 中的 Peter） 一再为 Puff 的清白辩护，但这种传言却未曾止歇，而且後来有更多穿凿附会的「证据」 被提出来。这些证据，像是说 "puff" 一词一直是抽大麻烟的行话；歌中的小男孩姓 Paper，指的就是纸烟卷；Dragon 音似 Dragging，指是就是抽大麻时吸入的动作；或 Dragon 可直接拆成 Drag on，同样是在讲吸入大麻…… 不过一般大众并不太相信这种说法，"Puff, the Magic Dragon" 受欢迎的程度并未因这 类传言而受到影响。1969 年 Peter, Paul and Mary 推出的儿歌专辑 "Peter, Paul and Mommy"，专辑中就收录有这首 "Puff, the Magic Dragon"，这张专辑不仅颇为畅销 ，更夺下葛莱美奖的「最佳儿童专辑」奖。 灵感来自童诗 Peter Yarrow 回忆，1959 年他还在康乃尔大学（Cornell University）就读时，某日邀 请他大一时的好友 Lenny Lipton 到他居住的公寓作客。「他坐在打字机前，把浮现他脑 海的东西记了下来，那就是 "Puff, the Magic Dragon" 这首歌开头的那一部分。」 Lenny Lipton 的灵感，来自他刚读过的一首由 Ogden Nash 所写的童诗 "Tale of Custard the Dragon" （巨龙卡士达传说）。 "Tale of Custard the Dragon" 的故事，主角是一只由小女孩豢养，名字叫做卡士达（ Custard，意为「蛋奶涷」）的龙，牠长相凶恶，但却极为胆小，常被其他宠物们所嘲笑 。有一天，一个持枪的海盗闯进这小主人家中，那些平时取笑卡士达的宠物们纷纷走避逃 命，只有卡士达勇敢地站出来，凶猛地逐退海盗、拯救主人。但海盗逃走後，卡士达又恢 复成原先胆小鬼的模样了。 几年之後，当 Peter Yarrow 不经意地翻到当日 Lenny Lipton 所留下的文字时，心想： 「哇，这有可能会是一首很棒的歌呢！」於是他接着写下了更多歌词，并把这首歌曲完成 。 ------------------------------------------------- Puff, the Magic Dragon Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff, and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee ----------------------------------------------------- 魔龙帕夫 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 小小杰基．派柏，喜欢这顽皮的帕夫 带了绳索、封蜡 还有其他神奇的东西给他。啊…… 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 他们一起出游 乘着巨帆扬起的船 杰基负起了望任务 高栖在帕夫的巨尾之上 高贵的国王和王子们 当他们抵达时都上前致敬 海盗船纷纷降下旗帜 当帕夫吼出他的名号时。啊…… 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 龙可长生，但小男孩不行 彩绘的翅膀和巨人的指环 被其他玩具所取代 终於在那个灰凄凄的夜晚 杰基．派柏不再前来 而帕夫这只无敌的巨龙 他无畏的吼声也因而停歇 他的头悲伤地垂下 青色鳞片如雨般掉落 帕夫再也不曾出来 沿着樱桃小径玩耍 少了他的终生挚友 帕夫勇猛不再 所以帕夫这无敌的巨龙 只能伤心地缩进他的洞穴里。啊…… 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 魔龙帕夫，他就住在海之滨 嬉玩於秋雾之中 在一个名为哈那里的地方 中译：Fafner --------------------------------------------------- 「这是一首关於纯真丧失的歌曲。」Peter Yarrow 曾不止一次地强调这首歌所欲传达的 主旨。我们从歌词来看，这的确是首很单纯的童真缅怀曲。 童真与想像力的消失 歌中所唱的，就是一个小男孩和他钟爱的玩具龙的故事——这只名叫 Puff 的魔龙，可能 只是一只蓬松松、毛茸茸的填充绒毛玩偶，哈那里也许就在阁楼上，或是男孩的游戏屋。 我觉得，若是用电影《玩具总动员》（Toy Story）的角度来看待这首歌，应该就更容易 理解。 小男孩在得到新玩具绒毛龙时，整天和这只龙腻在一起，幻想他驾着船，和巨龙一起远赴 世界各地冒险。他们乘风破浪、打击恶怪，是童话世界里的大英雄。 直到小男孩渐渐长大，有了新的兴趣、买了新的玩具，Puff 这只曾经风光的巨龙，就被 遗忘在阁楼的小角落里，孤单地渡过它的余生…… Peter, Paul and Mary 在解散後，Peter Yarrow 於 1978 年制播了电视动画 "Puff the Magic Dragon"，这个动画颇受欢迎，因此又制播了两部续集。2007 年，亦有以歌曲 故事所改编的童书绘本出版。在越战期间，地面攻击机 AC-47 也被腻称为 "Puff the Magic Dragon"，可见这首歌影响之钜。 --
