I arrived at Dominions in the East Village early during sound check to scout out the location and look for interesting backdrops for portraits. CMJ was showcasing 3 Taiwanese bands: 1976, Bearbabes, and Echo. I was instantly greeted with smiles and handshakes meeting management along with friends and family members of each band. One friend of 1976 told me how all the bands traveled all the way to NYC to just play at this venue and were retuning to Tawain in a day. Another friend of the band, told me he was traveling in America for a couple weeks and came to NYC to see his friends play. I have said this before in a post recently, but when I get to know who I am photographing, my work becomes better. By getting to know my subjects, the portraits I take suddenly have meaning because I find a way to portray their personality through pictures. As the show started, the room filled up out of no where. While 1976 was playing I often caught a slight resemblance to Block Party in a couple songs. I shot a couple pictures during the show but I sometimes think those pictures are boring or inhuman. It’s sometimes a photographer catching awkward mouth opening or closed eyed expressions. When I photograph bands, if it’s not a large venue, I would rather gain the opportunity to meet them and then photograph them. After 1976 was done performing, I went backstage to congratulate the band and asked if I could then take some pictures of them. They were all about it which is always a plus. Right when I started taking pictures, a reporter from the New York Times introduces himself to the lead singer and asked for an interview (last picture). I was surprised when the lead singer looked at me and asked “Do you want to finish first?”. I politely declined and told him to have the interview wondering to myself how many people would of put me first before the New York Times. After the interview, we left off where we started. I find it fascinating meeting people from different countries. They are so different from you and yet we are all human. Another photographer covering the event made a comment during the night that made me laugh. He said he was used to shooting big bands. What he naively didn’t understand that this band was big just not in America. They sell out shows in their home country and have a solid fan base. Often English speaking bands will travel to Asia and perform while most of the audience has no idea what they are saying. It doesn’t matter, they can feel the music. The same goes for bands you might not understand. Just because they might not speak the same language as you, does not mean you can’t try to understand how they are expressing themselves. -- 再来张FB上的照片: http://ppt.cc/ayWk --
