The feelings I have after finished reading Jian-Zhen's prose "The deer turns
round"
I have the full text of Jian-Zhen's prose "The deer turns round" in
hand. It is surely a nice prose, which won the third prize of Liang Shi-Qiu
memorial Literary Awards in 1990. I make a brief introduction about this prose
and key in my little feelings for it.
Except the first, the last three of the first part, the last three
paragraphs, the content of the full article of eleven pages is chiefly about
how she took care of him, the conversation between she and he, and her thoughts
and sentiments she had in the daily life of those years, but they are by no
means trivial or boring; Jian wants to display her ideal and concept through
all these small things. Through her elegant sentences with good rhetorical
embroidery, she shows her thoughtfulness in the presentation of literary ideas.
This prose is divided into four parts, all of the four are mainly about
the intimate relationship between the narrator in it and her younger cousin.
Jain-Zhen disposes eight tittles in it for the presentation of the full
article, 0 1 0 2 0 3 0 4 in order. 0 is regarded as the narrator's own
experiences in her growing up and her own inner world, and 1234 represent the
experience of her younger cousin's growing up and the conversations and mutual
interactions between them in his and her different ages. The chief purpose of
the whole article is just the reverse of the title. "The deer is unable to come
back", "The deer will never come back". Deer runs scatteringly on the land, and
it is symbolic of purity and unsophiscatedness rooted in primitive mind. This
simplicity would be faded away or even rotted as one grows older. Her younger
cousin is just an example of it. His parents are always working and seldom
well accompany him, but only try to satisfy him with a good material life such
as toys. She, who is his cousin and much older than him, has taken care of him
for a long painstaking efforts and thoughtfulness, and feels like to be his
mother and love him. But finally he is taken out of the country to the U.S.,
and will never come back, and the love between them originally is finally in
vain. This prose really displays her ideal about the spirit of maternity. Maybe
it's the reason why she could win the first prize of Shi-Bao literary awards
two years later by the article titled "She who is mother".
The meaning of the first paragraph is fairly obscure at the first
sight. It is as follows: "There exists one place, where the wind flickers the
grass in the field. The pregnant fern have gave birth to the spores. The wind
brings the infant spores to go traveling. Some fall on vegetable wives; some
gluse to black coats of swallows; some flow into the brook. River, alike a
thousand of vagabonds playing the flute, accompanies .... Will spore
infants bounce out from the aperture of the flute holes, bites on the edge of
clothes, comes back to their mother ferns finally ?" Her prose are almost
impossible to read very smoothly, and the sentences in them are full of poetic
feelings which enlighten us and instill goodness into readers. That's the
feature of Jian-Zhen's proses. There are also other sentences with poetic
feelings in the whole article. These sort of sentences may be the most precious
sentences in proses. ..
