小弟在两年前的某堂课把PTT当做是我整堂课的term project来做分析
那堂课叫 Fundamentals of Human Behavior
因为老外没看过PTT 所以势必小弟在第一次提到PTT时要大略介绍一下
可惜因为字数的限制 我只有简单介绍. 小弟就直接把我的介绍前一小段贴上
或许以後有人遇到老外问相同问题 可以参考有哪些点可以说
(如果你们觉得我提的点可以讲的话啦^^" 虽然我写的点没很多
写的也一定没有wiki好就是)

My target information system is PTT, one of the most famous bulletin board
systems (BBS) in Taiwan. Having been familiar with PTT, including its
formation, history, capacities, functionalities, cultures, and user types
on it, and served as the administrator of five boards
and the administrator of a class (in PTT, the upper level of a board is a class
), I am very interested in exploring the human behavior within this site.
PTT was created by a group of students from National Taiwan University. It was
originated as a platform that was aimed to provide academic resource and
expertise from a variety of fields. The site can be reached at telnet://ptt.cc.
Users have to install BBS client software or directly use the command prompt
and enter “telnet ptt.cc 23”to connect the server. PTT has become popular
and prevalent within student population. With rapid growing in the past several
years, PTT now is the largest BBS site in Taiwan. One of the major reasons that
PTT has become so popular is its diversity. Although its original target users
are college students, an increasing proportion of other occupations have joined
this large community. Therefore, the structure of PTT has been transforming
from an academic environment into a small society. In other words, the major
element within PTT is no longer merely knowledge and expertise, but all types
of information and interaction among people. For example, people can share and
access information about food, clothes, games, schools, recreation, gossips,
or even emotions such as love, hate, and happines in boards—places
to view and post an article. On the other hand, for the interaction,
people can throw "water ball", a form of instant message, to talk to one
another; send in-site e-mail; and participate in games, bettings, and votes.
Nevertheless, what type of role PTT is playing as depends on individuals.
For example, some users regard it as “PTTpedia” or “PTT knowledge” because
it has the property of mass intelligence. Some users just use it to look up
information while other users construct their identity and social network
on it. In other words, the social setting and the role of PTT is determined by
the people using it. Consequently, the more users involved, the greater the
diversities and social settings are within PTT, leading to higher capacity
and utility that can be provided to users. Influenced by this “network effect”
, PTT is beyond a system, which is a large, multi-functional community;
some people even claim that PTT is a small multi-dimensional society composed
of many small communities.
