吹笛者 我想起了Anne of Green Gables系列的最後两本书 作者借用了这个故事 写得非常感人 第七本叫Rainbow Valley 主角是Anne的孩子和牧师邻居家的小孩 他们常常在屋後的小山谷中玩 Walter是次子 他不像长子Jem勇敢富有冒险精神 但他继承母亲的想像力 是个敏感充满灵性的诗人 从小就会写故事写诗 Rainbow Valley就是他取的名字 这一群孩子不过11,12岁左右 某天他们在Rainbow Valley时 Walter「看见」Pied Piper "Some day," said Walter dreamily…"the Pied Piper will come over the hill up there and down Rainbow Valley, piping merrily and sweetly. And I will follow him…away from you all. I don't think I'll want to go--Jem will want to go--it will be such an adventure--but I won't. Only I'll have to--the music will call and call and call me until I must follow." 另一个爱幻想的妹妹Di说："We'll all go." "No. you'll sit here and wait," said Walter…"You'll wait for us to come back. And we may not come--for we cannot come as long as the Piper plays. He may pipe us round the world. And still you'll sit here and wait--and wait." 大家只把这当成Walter幻想出来的一个梦 但没有人忘记它 在书末 Jem 要离家上学了 这是第一次Rainbow Valley 的成员长期并且固定的离开 象徵着这群大一点的孩子童年的终点 在欢送会上 Walter又看见了Pied Piper "The Piper is coming nearer," he said, "he is nearer than he was… He pipes--he pipes--and we must follow--Jem and Carl and Jerry and Iꄊ （Jerry, Carl是牧师邻居之子，这四个就包括了当时在Rainbow Valley 所有 的男孩子）--round and round the world. Listen--listen--can't you hear his wild music?" The girls shivered… But Jem sprang up with a gay laugh…"Let the Piper come and welcome," he cried, waving his hand. "I'll follow him gladly round and round the world." 第八本书 Rilla of Ingleside 主角是Anne最小的女儿Rilla 离上一本已过了5,6年 她15岁 Jem 和Walter 20,21了 那一年是1914 在一个月光舞会上某人带来了英国宣战的消息 Walter Blythe had turned pale and left the room. Outside he met Jem, hurrying up the rock steps. "Have you heard the news, Jem ?" "Yes. The Piper has come. Hurrah! I knew England wouldn't leave France in the lurch…" 一个女孩则嗤之以鼻，在欧洲的战争关大西洋彼岸的加拿大什麽事呢? Walter looked at her and had one of his odd visitations of prophecy. "Before this war is over," he said--or something said through his lips--"every man and woman and child in Canada will feel it--you, Mary, will feel it--feel it to your heart's core. You will weep tears of blood over it. The Piper has come--and he will pipe until every corner of the world has heard his awful and irresistible music. It will be years before the dance of death is over--years, Mary. And in those years millions of hearts will break." Jem 和Jerry马上就自愿从军去了 Carl年纪不足 Walter伤寒初癒 尽管没有人期待他们去 （战争才刚开始 人们以为几个月就结束 当时一个家庭有一个儿子出征就算多了） Walter却不快乐 他应该要像Jem一样渴望出征 但他不 他怕--不是怕死，而是战争带来的痛苦与邪恶 他厌恶战争 厌恶一切丑恶的事物 一想到他要拿刺刀刺进另一个人的身体就受不了 他认为自己是懦夫 就像他曾经预言的一样 Jem的确「想要」走 而他自己不想…"The Piper's music rings in my ears day and night --but I cannot follow." Walter 和女孩们去念大学 困在自己的忧郁之中 小妹Rilla留在家 和大人一起承受着战争的压力 每天紧绷地等待新闻 担忧 害怕 随着战事急转直下 越来越多青年穿上卡其装 多到留在大学中的男学生若没有明显的伤病 就会被投以白眼 收到一堆嘲笑歧视的信 隔年 Walter还是从军了 他必须战胜自己的软弱----他成功了 Jem後来告诉Rilla 他自己在前线无数次感到害怕 但Walter从不 Walter是他的长官见过最勇敢的军人 "Realities never scared him--only his imagination could do that." Carl年纪一满也走了 很久以前Walter说的话终於实现了 男孩们follow the Piper 女孩们在家----等待 Walter赢得了一个勳章 Walter在战壕中写了一首家喻户晓的诗 "The Piper" 然後 有一天 在夜晚站岗的时候 Walter再度见到Pied Piper 听到他的音乐 他的身影晃过联军与德军之间无人的领地 後面跟着卡其装的男孩们 於是Walter明白 後天冲锋的时候 Pied Piper将领他西去 Walter并不害怕 他从不害怕死亡 而死去比起活着是容易多了 战争会结束 但记忆不可能消失 对他而言世界将不再如从前美丽 也许他没有机会写出小时候梦想会写的伟大诗篇吧 但他保护了未来可能成为诗人的孩子们 不是吗? "Yes, I'm glad I came, Rilla."他的最後一封信写着"…And we shall win… For it isn't only the living who are fighting--the dead are fighting, too…" 战争还没有结束 Anne送走她最後一个儿子 Jem失踪 Carl失去一眼 那是很难熬的几个月 然而战争总要结束的 失踪的Jem也有了消息 在德奥求和的那一天 牧师一家来到Anne家中晚餐 他们朗诵"The Piper" 牧师起身致辞敬酒："Let us drink," he said, "to the silent army-- to the boys who followed when the Piper summoned, 'For our tomorrow they gave their today'--theirs is the victory." --
