Fri Mar 13 10:10:19 2009
We at Michigan State have gone to using fresh chicken livers from the local
grocery store (or campus Meats Lab) for this purpose because of problems
taking samples off of the Necropsy floor. They work fairly well to recover
cells and also get those interesting nucleated erythrocytes to remind
students that not all erythrocytes are created equal.
We use a system to replicate the 'beast' for this lab. Place the chicken
liver into an exam glove and tie off the wrist and fingers to make a well
encapulated 'mass'. Place this on a rigid peice of insulation board (used in
cooler containers that come to the lab) and cover the entire system with a
piece of faux (fabric) fur and secrure with rubber bands. It gives you a
fairly accurate subcutaneous mass for practicing biopsy techniques and later
you can use the actual livers for imprints, etc. (Recently we have been
doing a lot of 'leopard' cytologies with our students and there are no
worries of attack from the beast being sampled!)

(peri-anal gl. adenoma)
